Why dont you just get two of the same couches?

My husband would like our grand kids to enjoy table tennis and Pool. We need to move the couches to set up folding tables once a week. For holidayswe can have up to 35 people for dinner in the basement.

I have my heart set on a sectional. Can one be made with castors so we can move it out of the way?

In theory anything is possible, but castors will mark the floor.

But I agree multiple couches is better, sectionals often have less seating since people don’t like to sit in the middle.

IMO sectionals are the most expensive uncomfotable seating you can buy. They offer only armrests for 2 people not matter how big the piece is and all the rest of the guests are sitting justlike that horrible center seat in the sofa. 2 sofas so easy to and IMO just abetter choice.

Two sofas with arms plus two chairs with arms are better than any sectional. Those pieces will seat
six people comfortably with arm rests, eight people counting one person in the middle of each sofa.
If you need more seating, buy good quality folding chairs or a third sofa to form a [ ___ ] -shaped seating
group with tables where the sofas meet. Dining has nothing to do with sofas or sectionals. Dining is always
better at tables with decently-padded folding chairs for larger groups. Your basements seems large enough to accommodate the sofa grouping in the center if you are watching sports or videos, and dining zones with
folding chairs at tables outside the conversation/tv zone.

Are you suggesting sitting on the sofa with a table in front for dining ?

Yes, sectionals can usually be taken apart. But the more often you do that, the sooner the locking mechanism (whether it's a pin or strap of some kind) will break. And there's no way you'd want it on castors. If it's not butted up against the corner of the room, the couch would move every time you sat down.

So while a sectional is possible, I agree that sofas and chairs are more versatile for rearranging, and more comfortable for those using them. We currently have a huge sectional in our family room, but we're getting rid of it and using sofas and chairs in our new build home once it's finished.

Why is your heart set on a sectional?

I think it's more cozy. I think more people can sit on it, and I think its neater than lots of pieces of furniture.

I thought if I placed part of the couch on a rug and if the castors had a locking mechanism the sofa would stay still.

I was planning on moving the sectional back towatds the staircase when we wont be using it during family dinners.

I have numerous large size sectionals and decided that the last one I had was going to be the last. The reasons being is that I observed when entertaining is that people don't like to sit next to each other. They like their personal space and chairs are always the first to be taken in the room. Also, people think you can sit more people on it but you can't as that corner piece no one wants to sit there. And it limits flexibility to move furniture around.

Not sure what you mean by ( in bold) " We would like to buy a sectional couch and have 2 areas where we can put it." Is this different than "however we need to be able to either move the couch or separate the seats to accomodate large family dinings once a week".

I suppose I have to give up the sectional idea. Its obviously not practical.

Hi Ted. Thank you. I wasnt sure if I should place a sectional in front of the large tv or in front of the Fireplace. We are aalso considering to purchase a pool table.

Which area is better for watching tv? the one near the kitchen on the right, where you see kitchen chairs, or the one where you see the ping pong table that can be folded and put away.

Should the sofa benear the kitchen and island area, or in front of the fireplace at the other end of the basement?

I’m looking at a sectional and taped the approximate dimensions and I’m wondering if an ottoman can fit in? It’s approximately 52 inches between the chaise lounge and the opposite side of the sectional .

We had a sectional in our last house and it worked well for family get together, every cushion would be used, It did not work well in our new home so we recently bought two couches. Jury is out on how well they will work, need to wait until our first big get together. Our holidays have been 18 to 32 people.

We have one with a ‘cuddler’ at the corner (not a 90 degree angle, there’s an angle and people sit there. Ours has a cleat to hold the pieces together... but it’s not really meant for frequent use and the sides aren’t really finished in that way.

For weekly use I would find something else. Or do a sofa with a chaise and maybe a couple chairs.
