Whats the best solution for keeping a decks underside area dry?

So we have a rather large deck in the backyard about ten ft high. I am planning on installing some kind of runoff under the deck joist as to keep the walking area dry during heavy downpours etc. I have a few ideas but it would be interesting to hear those of you who have done this and experienced the pros and cons! For instance: I figure the doves and other birds are going to find this very inviting for their nest! So I guess I may have to use some kind of barrier.

I purchased a large piece of geotextile membrane on-line and installed it over the joints and under the decking. We intentionally sagged the membrane between joists and made the sag gradually deeper towards one side to force the water to drain to that end of all the joist bays.

Yes I did think of this method years ago and I believe I seen it once. Great to know you tried it. Now what your overall satisfaction and rating on this system? Unfortunately I am just refinishing the surface of an existing deck. Would you suggest stapling this membrane to the sides of the joist? Perhaps securing it with a long strip of aluminum and screwing the membrane, then cutting to trim?
