The rough rule of thumb is the pull should be about 1/3 the width of the drawer. Vary your pull sizes according to the widths of the drawers. Also, different manufacturers make different sizes; there is no manufacturer standard size pull.

For upper cabinets, many people do knobs. If you want pulls on your uppers, it’s a good trick to make aluminum foil pulls in the sizes you are interested in, and hold them up against the cabinets to see what sizes work best.

Regarding bar pulls - many people don’t like the pulls with an open stick on each end because they may snag on clothes and pockets.

I used the Top Knobs Princetonian pulls and am very pleased with them. They come in about 20 sizes I think, and 3 finishes. I got the brushed silver.

I would add that I strongly recommend against your idea of getting cheap hardware now and replacing it later. First, you only want to install pulls once. You make a jig for each size, and it’s a bit of a tedious job. Second, there is a high likelihood that pulls you like later won’t be the exact same size, and then you run into trouble with the existing holes. Third, if budget is a concern, why would you pay twice for two sets of pulls? A set of pulls now and an entire new set of pulls later is throwing out your money, regardless if the first set is cheaper. It’s also a PITA.

I'm in the same boat right now, or will be when I get cabinets! I agree with Shannon_WI 's comments about width, etc. I'll only add that knobs do get dirty and there's more contact with the actual cabinet; and be sure to measure corner depth so you don't get pulls that have a deeper projection that will interfere with another drawer opening.
