"Therefore, send not to know for whom the pendulum swings, It swings for thee."

-- John Undonne

Sorry.

There are three possibilities. (a), the unit uses one of the standard battery powered clock mechanisms for which there is no pendulum movement. This is what I would expect from an artist concentrating on the appearance of his work. (b), condition (a) except a second powered motor is used to make the pendulum move without it being part of the clock mechanism. I suppose this is possible, but I think rare. It would use a lot of battery power. In historical pendulum clocks, the movement power comes from the potential energy of a weight that gradually drops and is pulled up periodically by the user, or a similar spring mechanism. (c), an actual pendulum movement. This makes the clock timing dependent on the pendulum mass and length, and a fine adjustment to the length would have to be part of the assembly. Timing accuracy would be suspect. The mechanical precision required is not reflected in the price.

Therefore, my estimate is that this is a fixed artistic pendulum.

P.S. There are contact details for his studio at his web site http://www.firenet.tv, so one might call and find out.
