Daffodil bulbs shrink in size

I planted some daffodil bulbs three Autumns ago and they bloomed beautifully the following Spring. But, did not bloom the next two Springs -- they only sent up folliage.When I dug up the bulbs, I noticed they had shrunk in size. They were half or less the size they started out as.My grape hyacinths, planted in front of the daffodils, flower with no problems. I don't remove the daffodil folliage until they get covered by my hostas.What can be the issue?

Lack of sun? Bad drainage? In general bulbs prefer well drained drier soils during their dormancy, but daffodils are usually tolerant and hardy.

Maybe they need longer than your hostas are allowing them.

It may be over watering, since we started reseeding around the same time in that area.

Could not planting the bulbs deep enough be another factor?
