Hi. I’m in Ontario and we had a light frost so in came my citrus trees and, like Hu and Samantha, the leaves started to yellow. I am not concerned though as they look healthy enough. I have one Persian lime tree in bloom and it smells Devine.

Do you put your valentia orange and Ponderosa under lights indoors?

Not yet, the trees show no sings of stress from the temperatures. Normally I still put them outside during the day at this time of the year. Its a bit difficult since its still cold at 7am. The garage hasnt dipped below 10C. My calamondin strangely looks better than in august, almost as if its enjoying the cold humidity. Maybe I was underwatering.

I'll see about the lights this winter. We just moved in our first house and I don't know if the garage would be suitable for a grow tent and LED. Worst off I have many south facing windows. I kinda wanna get transparent greenhouse for the hall of our southfacing walkout basement sliding door although I doubt my fiance would be happy about that

Congrats on your first home! All of those south facing windows sound perfect. I have south and southwest exposure but I bought some LEDs to lengthen the time of light exposure, as it won’t be long now until it is dark at 5:00 pm until 6:00-ish am. These LED lights have three long bendable ‘arms’ and they fasten to a surface with a built-in clamp. ($42.00 Cdn) Each full spectrum light provides (I think the box said) 44 watts. If nothing else, they create an artistic ambiance with the plants.

Its interesting to me to hear about your outdoor growing in the east. I would have thought it’d be too cold outdoors for the citrus In an I heated greenhouse , but I am learning otherwise.

I have a friend who has an outdoor greenhouse and he painted pop cans black and layer The ime sun heats them up and helps to keep out the frost at night.

I am in southern NH and it's the same thing here, 3 nights of frost and now it is warm again. I put some plants back out this morning and hope to get the rest out after work tonight, a couple Key Limes, a couple Meyer Lemons and an avocado and Mission Olive trees. I also have a couple hot pepper "trees" that I have had for a couple years. Everything except the Mission Olive was started from the seeds of organic fruits/veggies so in some cases I have no idea what varieties they are. The Key Lime and Meyer Lemons produce true to type so I am happy.

Mike, sorry to tell you Meyer lemon des NOT produce true to type when planted from seed.

Silica is right they don't. You may get some very different seedlings among the bunch. But you might get something really nice that nobody else has. Hell, I threw some clementine's seeds in a pot. I won't be getting Clementine's, If I run out of room the compost pile is calling.

Surviving here, the eye of hurricane Laura passed over us a month ago with 120+ mph winds, lots of large trees down, privacy fence down, power was out for a week (we were one of the first ones in the area to get power back), but it looks like all of the citrus trees made it, lost of lot of fruit off the trees though, probably over 50% and a couple of the smaller ones have only a few leaves left so we will have to wait and see if they make it. Most of the trees I lost were big pines and oaks, though I did loose a couple of mature European Pear trees, all of the younger fruit trees I have planted the last 4-5 years seem to have made it through. Overall we are doing much better than most, as we had no significant damage to the house, about 10% of the local population is still without power 1 month post storm, which is better than people to our south in Lake Charles, where about 1/3 are still without power.

Ike, glad you are at least OK. Sorry about the loss on your citrus. Where abouts in La, do you live? Laura was one nasty storm.

Here in Central California I have several mandarins that bloomed and are holding onto their small fruits and have mature fruits on them as well. I wonder if when spring hits if they will bloom again. This has been a real strange season so far with our climate.

I've got another month until I have to deal with things. It gets harder every year to figure out how to cram in all into the house. And of course I added a few new citrus, 2 of which have grown tons since I got them.

In the meantime, I need to start spraying for pests.

Moved smaller citrus to my garage greenhouse. Spectrum King Low Pro Flower on Gualala light rail. I have the opposite problem, trying to keep temperatures under 80 F. For many people I think a grow tent to overwinter would we a good option.

Kevin almost all My trees are inside the greenhouse already it’s insane how fast the weather changes it was so windy and cold last night that the wind bowled over most my citrus! 8 of the largest ones are still outside however waiting for a helping hand this Wednesday to lift and carry lol!

Actually flowers on a citrus tree this time of year is not desired. It is known as off season bloom. Fruit from off season blooms generally produce fruit of poor quality.

Silica, is this also true of calamondin? I ask because mine is in full bloom.

A healthy lemon or lime grown in a container can bloom and potentially set fruit at any time of year. Oranges it depends on the region and cultivar.

Just two potted citrus trees, a Meyer and a Ruby Red. The Meyer is going great, still growing. The Ruby Red is recovering from a repot at the beginning of summer but starting to show signs that the roots are taking hold again. Still 100 degrees in Phoenix, but at least mornings and nights are pleasant now.

This week we have what we call an indian summer, our temps have hone up in the 70's for a few days in a row without frost. i took my babies outside again. then I'll start alternating between outside day and garage night. after that i'll have to gradually bring it indoors in the day and garage at night as to not shock them. its been interesting this year. I really don't want the new growth emerging on my valencia to be weirdly shaped so it really does need the full sun outside. The warm days have been a blessing.

I'll have to post the before and after pictures of the valencia, it had 3 seperate good flushes of leaves this year and probably tripled in volume + it had 3 good sise fruits on it.

Kevin The striped green orange on your tree looks like it is coming along really nicely. It might even have red flesh with blackish seeds.

I had no idea I could even grow one like that unless it was on a farm. Good for you the warmer weather)) Time to cool down now starting Friday!! Ugh

I have grown watermelons in my backyard, they came out quite well. Inside would be tough as they are like cucumbers in they need to climb and cover a large area or at least the variety I had did.

Yes that was my biggest watermelon this year, only like 5 pounds but still good. It was dark out when I came home from work today, 72 hours this week. Did not have the time to take another pic of my valencia
