Help with ugly fireplace!

I'm working on making our downstairs TV room a real 70s kind of cozy den. Painted the walls Cushing Green (BM) and gathering some cool accents. The focal point of the room is the fireplace. Previous owners inexplicably plastered over the original brick and then just left the plaster (it was dark grey). It's not done in any particular way, which makes me think they possibly abandoned the project? I decided to prime the fireplace with the intention to pain it white but now that the primer is on, it almost looks worse. What do I do? The surface is too bumpy to tile. We're going to put a wood mantle above it but what about maybe putting a slab of stone or something on the hearth? Any color recommendations? I'm really feeling at a loss with this project - thank you for all your advice!
