FRONT YARD BLAHHH

My front yard needs some colour. When we moved in 3 years ago we’ve had these large bushes that over power the yard. I would like to scale them back and add some different heights of plants- perennials only. Any suggestions?

rip them out.. triple the depth of the bed .. and plant a tree in the lawn ...

location is imperative... big city name ...

and perhaps a pic of the whole lawn/lot.. so we can get a flavor of the whole scape ...

and perhaps.. some info on how carefree you hope to make it ....

Thank you Ken! My husband also suggested we rip it out too but worried it may be too bare. Here is a pic of the whole lawn

Also keep in mind I’m not a green thumb by all means and I like in Canada Ontario which means we have cold months!

Beautiful. Thank you Dig Dougs design. Would you be able to provide me the names of the plants. I only recognize the hydrangeas. Many thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Dig Doug’s Designs. Loved your suggestion on the landscaping so I thought I would ask if you had any suggestions on what colour I should paint the siding and bay window. We are getting a black front door and have black shutters on the upper windows that still need to go up. I would like a more updated modern look. I was thinking gray? What are your thoughts.

Attaching a pic below of what I really liked but not sure what colour the siding is

Looking at your house a few things stand out as unappealing.

The black garage door seems harsh. If you want to keep it I suggest painting the entrance doors black.

The second thing is the path to the doors. It is not wide enough for both doors. I suspect one door is a dummy but it should look as if both doors function.

I agree that you should reduce the size and perhaps remove a few shrubs.

    I made a crude image.

Not a pro. I think that a sage green or a slaty blue would look lovely for the siding and coordinate well with your brick color.

Thank you emmarene9. We are actually replacing the front door to a black single door with two side lights. Seems everyone has the same suggestion on the landscaping. Do you have a recommendation for colour on the siding and bay window. I’m trying to get a majority as I’m still undecided on a colour.

Ha, I only have one suggestion based on what I did in front of our house this year. Formerly there was a bed by the parking are and front door full of blah boring annoying standard Euonymus fortunei. No variegation, no cultivar, just the standard. To make it worse, it would climb the wall by anchoring in the mortar, damaging the mortar. It was replaced this year, and I targeted spring season shrubs for most of the bed because of how we tend to enjoy the yard. In spring, the snow is melting in mud season, there is really no area of the garden we would walk into and enjoy at all. We are still basically parking and entering the home. Having spring color by the front door would help bring some beautiful spring joy to us. I chose rhododendrons/azaleas mostly. As the season progresses, other areas of the garden become much more important than the front door area, so I don’t really need summer blooming plants there. Anyway, just a suggestion to think about the season where your eye might be drawn most to that wall, and choose plants accordingly.

I never thought of that and makes total sense. Thank you very much for your input!
