With no information to go on, I would suggest calling in a fire and water damage restoration company to come in and give you some professional advice.

thanks graywings , the smell is mostly likely from food, the place is a condo in a relatively new building . What other info do you think is helpfull ?

The nationally known company for this type of problem is called Servpro. There are franchises throughout the US. I'm sure there are others as well.

Since it is a condo, could the smell be coming from a neighbors condo?

Did you use an odor sealer on walls before painting? If not, it could be smell from the walls coming thru the new paint.

What type of flooring? Pet urine maybe?

I wondered about the flooring. Carpet holds smells. Use a uv light to check for pet urine. Something else you could do is have a plumber check the sewer vents. Are any traps in bathroom facilities unused and dried out. Could you have a sewer back up behind a washing machine dripping in the walls? Dead animal in a vent to the outside? Smell in dirty ac ducts?

Tracking nasty smells in a home is not fun. Good luck in resolving your problem.

I just went to a local home-improvement type store to buy a dehumidifier, but now I'd probably just search on-line and have it delivered to me. :)

You said there was a possibility it was pets. My sis bought a townhouse and when it had been closed up for the day while she was at work, she came home to an odor. She was loaned a 'black light' from a pet store and checked flooring and walls for stains. The upstairs hallway wall showed evidence of a cat spraying. No idea why. Deodorizing enzyme, sealant, fresh paint.

I love to keep up with feedback from different Home Stagers and the most involved feedback was this: 1) Pet odor in carpets: Replace the carpets and pads, paint the subfloor with Kilz Original Oil-Based Interior Primer and get the air ducts cleaned. 2) Cigarette odor: Fresh coat of paint throughout the house, replace carpets and pads, replace curtains/blinds/rugs.

The biggest pain for Home Stagers is working with a client to sell their home and having persistent odors linger throughout the home. One of our sayings is "if buyers smell it, they won't buy it", so some of us have taken drastic measures to get rid of odors. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this - good luck.
