Master bedroom reboot

Help! I have a lot to figure out, but three things I keep pondering for now: (1) I need a new paint color. (2) What in the world should I do with the fireplace? And (3) I need LIGHTS (there is one tiny wall sconce by the bedroom door, which doesn't cut it by a long shot). Thoughts?

Embarrassing "before" pictures (nearly everything is going):

^ I need a more pleasing (and less in-the-way) option for that (my husband's) hamper. Sofa is going. Plants need to be redistributed throughout the house, though some will stay in here.

^ Fireplace. I just don't know. It's very textured. I don't like it. We'll never use it. I was painting the room DE "Monsoon" because I love it, but I've decided I had it in the last house for 12 years, so it's time for something new.

^ DIY storage bed was important in the 10x10' master, and wise when I was still paying off mountains of student loans. Now that we have this huge space, it needs to go. (I was mocking up new head and footboard options--thus the lovely sheet-draped plywood--but I think the whole thing is just done for. I don't like how big/tall and imposing it is.) Yes, that's a pile of rugs in the corner.

^ The other wall, for good measure.

^The corner of the room I stare at every morning and would like to look spectacular.

Here's my first attempted mock up (walls are SW Cascades... extremely dark.. and my husband thinks I'm crazy; floors are cork and are non-negotiable for better or worse):

CB2 "alchemy" king sized bed.

Proposed dresser is Room & Board Copenhagen in white / steel (x2) (picture shows finger pulls replaced with knobs).

Nightstands: no clue.

Ambient lighting: no clue. Maybe track lighting?

Layout, for whatever it's worth:

Thanks to everyone for any advice!

Thanks! None of the rugs are favorites for anywhere in the house. Almost all are jute. They won't work with cork, IMO, so they all go.

I don't so much want to get rid of the fireplace as make it... better? When we put our offer in, I hadn't actually seen the house in person, and the master (including fireplace) was painted 100% bright YELLOW. I had no idea, despite 3-4 master bedroom pictures, that there was even a fireplace in there. I painted it white this round to make it clear that it exists, but it still feels weird crammed in the corner back there.

I was thinking of getting two matching dressers: one where the current dark one is, and one where the blue couch currently sits, and putting art over at least one of them. Art over the bed. Art (sculpture? rug?) over the fireplace. I don't like having the couch. I never sit there.. I just throw laundry on it (and then THAT's what I stare at every morning--ugh).

I'm not sure how I feel about a mantel.

Here's the other "maybe something like this" I threw together:

I start bedroom decor with the bedding usually in your case if you are keeping the sofa then something in a paisley would be agreat start but IMO anew bed for sure with that huge space there is no need for underbed storage and I would do an upholstered headbord to soften the large space. This is a nice paisley to work with the sofa

The sofa is going. The bedding is just white sheets about 60% of the year because it's hot here. I have a blush linen duvet cover in the "winter":

I'll admit that my husband would be open to escaping the 'pink'...

I think a mantel would help the fireplace tremendously. Once you've added that and whatever artwork you choose over it, I'm betting you will like it so much more.

Also agree with getting a large headboard/bed to help take up space on that wall.

That wall color you mocked (Cascades) is *gorgeous!* One thing to consider - walls in any dark color will make the fireplace stand out even more if you're keeping it white (I like the white, btw).

You have a cool room & I look forward to seeing what you choose!

Does it work to go big on art instead of headboard? I tend to be drawn to low and lean beds. I do kind of like canopy beds:

... but I think it would conflict with the reading lights (I use mine every night)?

I don't have art for the bedroom yet. I like to buy local and, well.. pandemic.

A better picture of the fireplace:

The asymmetrical hearth drives me nuts (where it cuts in to meet the walls), and the texture makes it impossible to keep clean, but I don't know how I could change it cost-effectively other than to simply have it smoothed out the next time my drywall contractor is over.

If I didn't care for the FP, I would remove the hearth and cover it up (not remove in case the next owners want it) and I would put the bed there. That will give you two walls for other furnishings.

I definitely hadn't thought of that. While the bed would certainly fit there, it kind of limits my nightstand/light options and leaves me staring at the 'dark' side of the room while lying in bed, rather than looking out the slider to the pool & garden.

My husband thinks Cascades will be too dark. I might try it anyway, but does anyone have a not-so-dark dark teal paint color they love?

Okay.. currently thinking the way to move forward is with a more versatile bedframe, like this:

Then I can decide how art and a headboard work together later.

Still leaning toward two of these (his & hers):

With all black and white, I think this leaves an open slate for wall color, art, lamps, pots, rug(s).... Does that seem like a good start?

Changed directions. Found a dresser I liked on craigslist for a whole lot less than buying new, so out with the sofa, and in with some teak. Simple black bedframe is coming next week.

This room is slightly over houseplanted. I wish I could afford the massive piece of art this wall could accommodate..

Have I totally screwed up yet?
