I agree that it's fine. It's neat, organized, and appears to be functional. Not every element that's "out in the open" in our homes must be decorative. I'd just let this be what it is, and not fret over it.

But a home like that is a great place for classic furniture. Look for a large breakfront or library unit with solid doors below and glass on top.
