Hi Heather, there shouldn't be any need to worry about flies if your bin is sealed. Not literally sealed just resting on top of one another without gaps.

Perhaps it would be useful to give us a bit more info or pictures, as I'm struggling to visualize the issue you are looking for advice on. With a worm compost, it's usually pretty clean, so long as the bin is well built.

I followed the wormery instructions from The Yard and Garden when I build mine and I've had no problems at all with flies.

Hey thanks Ben! Some small flies were making their way into the bin but I adjusted the height between the bins and made sure to cover additions with plenty of bedding and haven’t been having issues now! Now my issue is that while I have a great number of worms multiplying, I can’t get them to move up into the top bin on their own! Haha any suggestions?

Glad to hear your initial problem is solved. If flies persist reduce the number of scraps you are adding at any one time

If you fill the lower tray with scraps until it reaches the top the worms will compost that section, then add a small amount of the worm castings to the upper tray, and begin to place your food scraps into the top level. As long as the contents of the bottom tray and the base of the top tray are in contact the worms will migrate upwards towards the fresh kitchen scraps

You have to join the two levels basically and create a worm ramp or ladder lol

Thanks Ben! I removed the spacers to allow the bottom of the top bin and the materials of the bottom bin to touch. Now we wait!
