I need to finish my 9 year old daughter's "big girl" room (used to be pink/yellow w/ flowers and butterflies) before she returns to DC from Nana's on 8/13-- in 4 days!!! I've already started. She loves cool blues and greens, yellow--and as of last weekend, purple. She has a passion for reading and traveling. I'd really like to make WORLD TRAVELER the theme.

I need help with selecting...
1. A comfortable, relaxing seating (slipper chair, perhaps?). That open space next to nightstand is 36".
2. Simple window treatment that goes ceiling to floor (8 feet). Should I hang sheer white to keep the room feeling spacious?
3. A decorative birdcage. What color and material? I'm definitely going to remove the butterflies.

Need help now so I can go shopping this weekend. Thanks!!!

Since you don't have much time I would search locally...T J Maxx, HomeGoods, Target, Pier1, World Market, and Ikea if you have one. Look for colorful throw pillows for the bed, a chair, a more grown-up colorful lamp, a big mirror and some art for over the bed. The birdcage is from Hobby Lobby and the poster from www.allposters.com

oh, i love the bedspread!

i would do a slipper chair in that space. for color, i would do something neutral, but textured.
you can always get travel themed pillows at target.

a birdcage, i would do a black or a bright bright color (green?)
and window treatments, i would do a layer of sheers, but i would also do more substantial panels, in a tropical feeling fabric, so blues, greens, yellows (since it looks like those are the colors in the comforter).

oh, and if you can't find actual panels you like, look at bedsheets and table cloths!

table cloths you can hang with rings, bedsheets, check measurements for height, but they have the hem at the top that can serve as a rod pocket. if you're not planning on having them move, most people won't notice that they're sheets.

I think for a girl's room that sheers give softness and femininity. Add stationary side panels, in a blue of green. I can't see that pattern on the duvet, but it looks at this point that it could be a room for a boy OR a girl (with the exception of the butterflies, LOL).

Hi---nice start, I do agree with Nancy though, could be for a boy or a girl. Like this artist's work and think it might work well with what you have in the space. Good Luck!

for the art, if you're able to find a non-watermarked version for a reasonable price, you can take it to staples or kinkos, and have it enlarged to poster size.

Thanks so much for all the wonderful advice! The duvet cover is from Serena & Lily.

I went shopping this weekend and found the following items, which I need help determining which will look best.

Slipper chair...neutral linen (I'm leaning toward this one!) or the green?

18" Birdcage...should I paint it a blue to match duvet cover, or leave it as is? Anyone know what type of spray paint to use? I guess I'd go to Home Depot/Lowe's to but it?

Definitely the white curtains. If you go with the linen chair, which I do like the style of better, you will need to oomph up the color factor in other ways, especially for a 9 year old. You can get a spray paint that works on many different surfaces including metal, Krylon makes one that comes in lots of colors, but there are other brands as well. Consider a headboard similar to the one in the Serena and Lily picture of your bedding. Your daughter will be able to comfortably lean against it to read in bed.
