front entry dilemma

Remodeling our house in Dana Point. Mid century beach bungalow. Need some advice on front door entry area. We want to be able to take advantage of the breeze that comes in front door and sweeps through the whole house.

We also don’t want to leave our door wide open as there is not much of a front yard. I don’t like screen doors as they feel flimsy. I don’t want a steel security door.

The architect came up with a window right next to the door but it looks funny to me. Maybe the proportions? I like the proportions in pic with green door but what kind of window would open? I also like the blue door, but the window next to that does not open either? What do you think?

Is there room to do side lights? If so, there are ones that open and would give you that continuous look of the door and other windows going to the ground rather than that odd window next to the door as you are right, the proportion is funky. And I think they would give you the privacy you still want.

There are retractable screens that fit into doorway. Very unabtrusive.

I like the idea of a retractable screen for the sliding door. I would get screens for the windows and add a longer window next to the door with grids that mimic the other windows.

Thank you, everyone for your comments/solutions! And thank you houssaon for the drawing. You bring up a good point about it being consistent with the other windows. I looked into sidelights as well; they look nice, but it was going to cost- like buying 3 doors. I also forgot to mention that I have a dog, and she might wander out the sidelight.
