Some fall scenes and a rebel seedling

It has been DRY, dry, dry here all summer long, with our drought monitor in the SEVERE category. My poor plants have suffered terribly so there will be no posts about late bloomers. The plants look too pathetic for picture-taking. It has been frustrating to watch the weather reports of all the rain going south of here and how some states were flooding, while we couldn't get a single rain event. I do landscaping part-time and at all my jobs when I dig down 2 feet to plant trees and shrubs the ground is bone dry. Wells have been going dry all summer so I could very rarely water anything. It is not good for plants to be so stressed going into winter. I hope I don't have many losses.


The foliage is not as vibrant as usual due to the drought but there is some. At the request of our friend Kate.....here are some scenes worth posting:







I had a hiking date with my oldest grandson and the views atop the mountain normally would be unobstructed and clear....but there is a haze from the California wildfires. It's hard to believe it would be seen this far across the country but it goes on the jet stream. These are scenes from the mountain summit:

    A precocious seedling from seeds I started in March of this year.....just got done blooming last week:



    The cross is: Pink Princess Slippers x Lillian's Vapor Trail. It is a huge bloom.

      Beautiful scenery, I love it! Not much happening here yet, but soon. It has been cooler than normal, no frost yet but been down in low 40s. Really nice seedling, I crossed Christmas in Oz with Lillian's Vapor Trail, only got a couple of seeds but maybe will be nice.

      Beautiful landscape scenes despite your drought! Thanks for sharing those. That seedling is gorgeous. I love both the color and the form! Your first year with seedlings has been so impressive. I saw someone on NGA about a week ago reposted your Smoke Scream seedling pic on the September blooms thread and said that's the daylily they most want. That one is quite the homerun!

      Thanks for the lovely photos! Nothing beats fall foliage in the mountains! And the tree reflections in the lake are beautiful. I am glad I asked for these! :) And the grandson is so cute on top of the mountain. The seedling looks pretty special too. Looks like it definitely will be one to watch!

      Beautiful fall foliage scenes in your neck of the woods. The leaves here are quickly dropping but the colors are vibrant. We too have had very dry conditions but have gotten a couple of storms to ease the lack of rain. Hope you get some rain.

      The hot colors are a nice contrast with the greens. Evidently, you are not at peak yet? Or are the greens conifers?

      mantis, we are nearly at peak. The sea of green on the surrounding mountains are conifers. As the elevation increases, there are less deciduous trees and more spruce. The higher mountains are covered predominately with evergreens. Some of the trees are late in turning colors this year, mainly the oaks. The maples and birch are at peak.
