Foyer in the City!

I would like to spruce up our entryway this weekend. My husband, daughter and I reside in a townhouse in DC. We love warm, earth colors.

Pic 1: foyer - leather bench, w/ pillow and umbrella stand.

Pic 2: alcove and coat closet, directly to the left when you enter house.

Pic 3: powder room across from bench.

Pic 4: Great room, so you can see the colors to pull from.

Please send suggestions w/ pix, as I need help selecting the following items. (Budget $500.)

1. A simple, neutral rug. How large should it be? Should it take up most of the foyer and slide all the way under the bench?

2. Some decorative floor pieces. The umbrella stand in the corner looks kinda wimpy w/o our umbrellas, which are in the car. Do I need some wicker baskets in various sizes for the floor. Do I need a plant? What size?

3. A flush-mounted lighting fixture that complements the one in our Zen room, located next to foyer

4. Do we need a small mirror or artwork somewhere?

We have a design taste similar to yours, qwanda, though a bit more modern and in grays. My designer wife is using artwork, as you suggested, and bright fabrics, and (since it's an entryway) probably an area rug ... all dependent on your taste of course. We've found a good source for economical and interesting lights at LampsPlus.com ... they've also been reliable on delivery and on claims.

If it were me -- and clearly it's not -- I'd move toward some soft greens and brighter reds, especially cranberry. In the corner by the low bench, for example, Pier One currently has a good sale in this area on tall (over 4') glass vases that read as a "watery" green; she plans to find a sapling in the woods this fall which I'll sand and paint, probably white. It will be 7' tall or more to balance the vignette she has set up next to it.

But again, I only mean to give you an example and perhaps stir your juices for your own solution. Good luck.

Some thoughts
1.The foyer is not a straightforward space so I would concentrate on a runner (6-8ft long) beside the leather bench/ stool.

If you have space, I would add a cabinet in the foyer. This can help fill the space and also comes in useful as a storage space for keys, gloves, umbrellas, etc. As well, I would add a mirror. You could hang one over the cabinet or hang a full length on some unused wall space. Another great piece that adds to the room and is functional. I have attached some ideas below.
