a few years ago I successfully grew Chicago hardy figs in Zone 5. it was my first experience with figs, and they tasted amazing! There are better tasting figs out there and there are a few different flavor profiles you can get with Figs. If in the ground is necessary, get the Chicago hardy, know it will die to the ground each year, and it may not show new growth until May/June from the roots. If you can keep it on the south side of your house, you will likely have even better success.
If you are willing to look after pots and move them into the garage or an unheated shed for winter, you could grow a whole slew of different figs.

There are quite a few. Florea, Marseilies Black VS, Malta Black, Hardy Chicago and most of the Mt. Etna varieties, Ronde de Bordeaux and others. You can also try the newer Unknown Teramo.

Magnolia and Kadota

Magnolia is in the same group as Brunswick, LDA and Dalmatie. They are cold hardy, but a little later than most of the above. Kadota is a green sugar fig. I think it is hardy enough.

I lived in Atlanta Ga zone 7b and grew over 20 different kinds but for only 2 years so I don't know long term results, but I can tell you one thing early frost would kill leafing and young fruit. So don't get a early fruiting tree, they need to stay dormant till frost is gone in your area.

Good point. I'm just not sure if early leafing and early fruiting are the same thing. Most of my figs break dormancy at about the same time. But certain varieties set fruits earlier. Those are the varieties that are good for shorter growing season like people in Zone 5 and Zone 6.

The past spring, most of the fig trees had frost damage and almost all varieties were affected. Not much we could do about it.
