Buying the gift code is a great trick! Whenever they have sale I always get annoyed that 2 roses don’t meet the $65 free shipping threshold. When they have 20% and sometimes 30% sales I think it’s a good deal because their plants are large and grow faster than quart sized bands.

@sbrklyn_7bny I spent some time on their website trying to find something to get the free shipping, but I couldn’t find anything, then I noticed their gift card starting at $1, so bingo, I got the $3 gift card emailed to myself. I hope they don’t change the gift card starting at $25 later. Helen

Helen, how is your Guy de Maupassant doing for you? I've thought about that rose for years but never hear much about him. Is yours own root or grafted? A good bloomer?

@flowersaremusic z5 Eastern WA My Guy de Maupassant is still very small and hasn't bloomed yet, so I'm still waiting to see how it will perform in my garden. I got mine from HeirloomRoses so it's own root. Helen

Thanks, Helen. I figured if own root, it might still be small. I went ahead and ordered it from Rosarium Garden Center because last time she had it, it sold out quickly. They've had it growing in their display gardens for years, although I don't recall seeing it. Their weather is a little more severe than mine because they're on a windy high plain, so I'm hoping it'll survive for me. I'm looking forward to seeing your photo essay of this one.

flowersaremusic...I have three Guy de Maupassants in the ground for three years now and sadly, they seem to be growing backwards. It's one of the few roses that haven't done well for me. I was thinking about taking them out this season. I would love to hear about how they do for you and Helen in the future! Hopefully you both have a better experience with it. It has the most gorgeous blooms that make beautiful cut flowers.

Rosylady, I'm surprised yours aren't doing better. Do they just need moving? Even though he has been thriving in the Rosarium's gardens, I have a suspicion he is marginally hardy here, so I will probably grow it in a pot and let him hibernate in the garage during winters, or plant him in my cutting garden where it's all day sun. The problem with pots is I can't see myself repotting and changing the potting soil every few years. That sounds messy. Anyway, I only ordered one at 19.95, so it'll just be a $20 lesson.

Mine are planted in the toughest part of my garden....really dry soil under a huge fir tree that's limbed way up so it's very sunny there. Maybe I'll increase the irrigation in that spot. The flowers are so beautiful, it seems worth trying harder. It is really blackspot prone here as well, which is a chicken-and-egg situation for sure.

The first time I saw this rose was a large drift at the Portland Rose garden. It was gorgeous! I noticed the next time I visited that they were gone. They must not have done well there. Maybe it does much better in your climate which has drier spring and early summer weather.

Rosylady, I can see why you were inspired to plant your own. Wow! What a sight. Fungal problems aren't normally an issue here, but in the recent past, the weather has been a surprise every year.

Vap, I thought the same thing - it needs religious deadheading to look it's best.
