Window treatment ideas for wide windows - 2 panels or 4?

Our family room is an odd shaped room, with a set of very wide windows. To me it looks nice overall, but I'm not sure what to do with the windows to dress things up. I was thinking of sheer blinds (inside mount) with curtain panels on each side. Do you think that would look ok or should I use four panels across? And what kind of hardware do I use? I think it's much too long to have one rod all the way across the top. Could I just use two shorter length curtain rods for each panel on the end? Looking for some ideas and also fabric ideas on the panels--patterned or solid? what color? Thanks for your advice and opinions!

@BeverlyFLADeziner Thank you for giving guidance on the curtains-specifically how to calculate how many panels. I appreciate that. It's about 2 feet from the top of the window trim to the ceiling. I thought perhaps I should place the panels half way to the ceiling? Although I like the look to the ceiling in your pictures. I will definitely need a wand.

The sunken room is awkwardly shaped with an angle (and the step down) as you enter the room. While I agree it would be better to put the couch centered in the large window, it's awkward to move the loveseat back. Here are a few more pics to see what I mean. I have thought of swapping the seating and putting more on an angle to face the fireplace, but it makes for awkward TV viewing. I appreciate your suggestions!

Do drapes at least 2x and better 2.5 x the width of the rod and in your case a solid rod that can be hung with just a center support I really dislike skimpy panels hung on either side of any window .And for heat and light control some solar shades that let you keep the view and give you daytime privacy and then close the drapes at night if you need privacy.

Yes, those loveseats are the perpetual "fly in the ointment' when it comes to arranging. It is a favorite seat for someone? Have you ever tried it in the nook where the chair and table are? Could be a nice reading spot with the table for your coffee. Then center the sofa with the window and put the two blue chairs side by side floating perpendicular to the fireplace with their backs to the angled step-down. If you don't mind seeing the mechanism, it is reasonable to replace the legs on your chairs with a swivel option. Might look something like this.

OK now I see the full issues. Is there enough room to place the TV to the other side of the fireplace?

@BeverlyFLADeziner Yep you are right on regarding my room. Here's a crude diagram I once drew up for myself. This is how I arranged the room previously. It was in the arrangement for 7 years until now. (We also moved the piano to the basement.) While I liked it, everyone else in the family demands that the tv be on the larger wall so we can see it from the kitchen. And as it is, our current tv console would be a tight fit to the left of the fireplace. I thought I could figure it out but it's still be quite challenging. I just now rearranged it as @decoenthusiaste just suggested and it does feel better to me. I'll post those pictures in a minute. But this is how I had it previously.

    Here's how I'd tweak it.

I just made my husband help me move things around. The room is much better but still needs a little tweaking. The chairs and long coffee table don't seem to work easily when placed with their backs to the angle. What do you think?

Well, I moved everything over again. I think there's room to do this. Does the loveseat have to stay?

Added bluish/greenish drapery panels & woven woods as a valance UNDER the panels. See images below. The shades could function or they could be there to simply the window wall a bit.

So typically for a corner fireplace LR I'd recommend something like this below.

Better! Think about using the "coffee table" as a bench on the wall left of the fireplace with some new pillows propped on it. Since you have two side tables for sofa sitters to use, you don't need it. Then move the chairs (with an arm height side table between them) perp to the fireplace, as I suggested earlier. You have room for a skinny reading lamp tucked in the corner by the loveseat.

@BeverlyFLADeziner I really love your idea of the woven shade with the side panels. It really does unify/simplify the windows! I think this will have great impact. Thanks or the furniture arrangement ideas too. I am still tweaking a bit but corner fireplaces certainly make things difficult. Thank so much for taking the time to "discuss" my room. I am so grateful to have you guide me to make better choices for my room. It really helps me avoid any costly mistakes for sure!

@decoenthusiaste I hope this posts - this is my second attempt to load. I gave it a go by putting the bench to the left of the fireplace. Not sure this works the best. In hindsight swivel chairs probably the better choice. When sitting on the couch the rest of the room looks off. Anyway, what do you think now?

@BeverlyFLADeziner One more question for you. If I do the woven shade/valance under the panels, would you suggest getting multiple shades on one headrail? I see from a quick search, the longest width made for shades like that are around 100". My total width (including trim) is 175"! Maybe it's best to just have a custom valance made without the full functioning shade. Otherwise I could get one large one for the middle three windows and then two smaller ones for the ends and mount them butted up to one another.

I think you could consider moving the 2 blue chairs to face the tv.

You could also flank the fireplace with the chairs if you want to try that, but they won't be handy to watch TV. Amazon has swivel bases for about $50 each if you decide to convert the chairs. I do prefer the" table" as a bench; it just looks like it is meant to be one. Maybe you should consider selling the loveseat and using the $$$ to buy a game table to put in the little alcove. Do you think your family would get any use from it? The bench could go in there on the wall side, and a pair of straight chairs or stools on the other side. You might pick up something like that 2nd hand.

I like the couch centered under the window. Can you move the TV and console to the left of the fireplace? Chairs angled on each side of the couch.

@Joy M The area to the left of the fireplace is not big enough for our tv. It would be a very tight fit.

This weekend my husband and I moved things around again and even swapped out the blue/green chairs with navy swivel chairs and a round coffee table from another room. We also tried our TV to the left of the fireplace and it actually fits! It's maybe a tad tight, but I think it still looks ok ( and it's what we have to work with). SO my new question is, are the navy chairs better than the blue/green chairs? And if we keep the navy swivels in the room what can I do to accessorize and bring more of that blue/green color back in? Also we moved the furniture arrangement back to our original layout (on an angle) which gave the best tv viewing for all seats in the room. Thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated.

@decoenthusiaste @BeverlyFLADeziner you both had great ideas and I'm wondering what you two think of this in particular. If I can or should work with you in a project format please let me know how to do that. I've never done this before.

I like the round coffee table, but notice how much "round" you've got going on!. You might want to pare down on that when we start accessorizing! The window treatments will make a big difference and will change the amount of wall space you have where the clock is, so try hanging it up in the vaulted area of the kitchen/breakfast area. You never did comment on my suggestion about a game table in the little recess with the bench and chairs or stools. Nice that the navy chairs swivel but I prefer the shape of the blue-green chairs best, and they give you leeway to decorate more with that color. Turn your lampshade so the seam is toward the window. I'd love to see the sofa on the big wall now with the art from the fireplace hung 5" above it, and a floor lamp in the corner by the window. Then you could center the love with the window and let it have the table and lamp on the nook side. Can't tell what the starburst mirror is made of, but you could paint it to pick up on a color from your new accessories (maybe the blue-green or even black) and hang it 5" above the mantel. The trick to all this is to keep trying things and a good arrangement will come out of it. I understand the angled seating working for watching TV, but it eats up lots of floor space. Easier to put the TV on a swivel base so it is more adjustable.

@decoenthusiaste I will give it a go one more time with the long couch on the long wall and loveseat in the window. I also think the couch could fit by the window and loveseat on the long wall as well. I guess it just depends how the blue-green chairs work out with that arrangement. My hubby doesn't want to move any furniture again but I will enlist the kids! A table in the alcove sounds like a smart idea, but I will need to first figure out how to make the rest work. I agree that the clock will need to move once window treatment are hung. Thank you and I will post more pics once I get things rearranged!

@decoenthusiaste I hope these photos load. I moved things again and would like your feedback. Do you think I can fit the second blue chair next to the loveseat by the fireplace or will that be too cramped? What is the best location for the tables and lamp? Your nook suggestion makes more sense to me now with this arrangement. What type/shape of table should I look for in the nook and what style or type of chair?

I don't think I'm going to like it until the big sofa is on the big wall with the big art above it. You need the room to speak and it isn't. There's no welcome feeling here, but you can get there. Since you don't have any pieces for the nook. I think you should put the love back there and center the two chairs and the larger table and lamp in the middle of the window, side by side with the square table. If you like them angled, then you need a round table. I know you're getting tired of moving things; are you using sliders? The bottoms of gallon plastic jugs can work really well. It will be worth the effort in the end!

@decoenthusiaste I honestly don't like the loveseat in the nook area because it's so far away from all the main part of the room. I agree that long wall needs some big art but I'm going to wait on moving anything from the walls until the arrangement works for us. Whew, it sure is a lot of effort. For now, we'll try living with the current arrangement for a few days and then I'll try your latest suggestion. I think once I get window treatments and the right accessories, the room will be fabulous. Thanks for sticking with me through this!

You're welcome. Its fun! I get not liking the loveseat in the nook. I don't like them anywhere! Is it the favorite chair of someone? Mostly they get very little use 'cause they are made for lovers and most people don't want to sit that close. Even on a 3-seater they'll often leave the middle empty so they can turn to each other for conversation. You could actually do a nice arrangement if it weren't part of the equation. You might sell it and use the money to get the right thing for the nook. As for art, I think that fireplace piece would be perfect with the sofa on that big wall, Really, its a bit too wide for the fireplace. It looks more balanced if art is no wider than the firebox opening below.

I think I would do a simple top treatment - 1 pc all the way across & inside mount blinds IF you need them. Otherwise - keep it light in there. If you use a print, plaid or stripe (which would be nice) use the same or complementary fabric on any other window viewable from your living room. Make sure to place the treatment high towards the ceiling.

I would just like to add that painting all of your trim white would freshen and modernize your home.

Consider switching the picture and the mirror. Centering the big picture with whatever ends up on that wall. I know you are wanting a simple rearrangement but consider in the future removing the half walls and raising the floor. It would give you so many more options.

@Lizzy L.Thanks but the trim will have to stay. We just replaced all 35 windows and trim in our house! I get that white is the popular choice but we are sticking with what we've got. :)

@Becky Bean The step down definitely makes it challenging!

@decoenthusiaste @decoenthusiaste Ok I flipped the couch and loveseat. While it looks nice in the pictures, it feels off sitting in the room--perhaps because the loveseat is off center from the windows. Maybe we will get used to it? Should the coffee table/bench be in front of the loveseat or the couch? We'll live with it for a day or so and decide how it works. And I like the idea of swapping around the art pieces. If I move the fireplace art, would I need anything else on that wall?

Just remember to mount ant curtain rods at least 5-6 inches above window frames.

I'm pleased with the larger sofa on the large wall. Why not take down the FP art and prop it on the sofa back to see how it feels? I would replace it with the starburst mirror which has been hanging out in that lonely corner for way too long. What is it made of? You could paint it perhaps. I'm having trouble understanding why you have pretty much refused to center anything on that window. Does that really crowd the nook and step down that much? Looks like Hubby is enjoying TV from that chair. I would try the two chairs centered on the window with the small table between them. Measure the trio of 2 chairs and table and see if it doesn't take up a bigger footprint than the loveseat. if you need a larger item in the window then group the larger table and lamp with it and get a floor lamp right of the sofa to light the corner. This would be the answer to the feeling that the love is disconnected from the rest of the seating, especially if you found a hassock to use with the loveseat. I think this photo here is the closest you've come to getting it to work. Once the loveseat was out of the picture and you rotated all the other seating to the right (you've done that with the TV and sofa) you began to gain balance and space. Keep the coffee table with the sofa. It is too large for any other seating.

Thanks for all the feedback. I do appreciate it! The couch on the wall looks good but a centered loveseat puts it about 4.5' feet away from the couch. It feels too far away and looks small. The two chairs with table is a bigger footprint and would fit better for sure. But that leaves a forlorn loveseat over by the half wall of which no one was a fan. Maybe a hassock would help that. Honestly, everyone is sick of my indecision. :) The rest of the family votes for the previous arrangement with the couch by the window and loveseat on the wall. I can try the blue chairs by the window as the last option. At this point, it seems the loveseat doesn't work anywhere but everyone wants it in the room. The fireplace art would look good on the long wall. I don't want to alter the round mirror (with fiber like/raffia type material), andI have another place in the house I can put it. I'll just look for a different art piece for the fireplace. Next pic will be with the blue chairs by the window. Thanks again.

You're such a trooper! Wish I was there with my sliders and we'd knock it out in no time. IMO, loveseats are one of the biggest design failures in history. They seem to mess with arranging seating in almost every situation I've seen. Can it float perpendicular to the last window by the nook once the chairs are in place? Then we can see about a game table for the nook.

I am so over drapery. Just love wide plantation shutters. Expensive yes but they add value to your home.

For a curtain rod that will fit the space look at Pottery Barn, they have a connector that allows you to connect multiple rods so they are continuous. They also have 100 inch panels in some of their styles. We have a Florida room with windows all the way across the back of our house and used the connectors for one continuous look.

I like that so much better! Hang the art 5" above the sofa. I think you can move on to the curtains for now. Later you can accessorize more with a skinny reading lamp (as I showed before) in the love's corner and a floor lamp in the right corner by the sofa. When budget allows, replace the square table with a round one if you want to angle the chairs. It is looking good and you'll get used to the love being in the nook once you start using it for a relaxing spot to read. You could pick up a little ceramic garden stool to set there for your coffee mug. That will fill a bit of what you probably see as too much space right now. Remember, the drapes are going to fill some of what you now see as a void.

@decoenthusiaste We're enjoying the layout! We're still getting used to it and honestly we don't really sit on the loveseat. I tend to sit on the couch because I like stretching my legs out and laying around. :) My husband prefers the chairs and the kids like to just lay around the floor for some reason. I'll look for a little stool - I like the one you suggested! I think curtains will definitely help finish the room. The windows are so bare. Thanks again for all your help! I really appreciate your advice.

Glad to hear its working out for your family. Sounds like the loveseat may soon find a home elsewhere and that maybe the kids will enjoy a game table if they can lay their devices down (making an assumption here!) Glad to help out anytime.

I think the newer arrangement works better for the room in general, although I would move the sofa so that it meets the left end of the big window rather than overlapping the end of the window. The loveseat may work okay if moved back a bit toward the nook. If the loveseat leaves, you could get a recliner or leather chair for Hubby or put the two blue chairs there. The nook might be a perfect spot for a comfortable reading area: comfy chair, footstool, and a small side table with a lamp. For window treatments you need to consider the issues of privacy and light control. In the evening when lights are on, sheers may not offer privacy. In the daytime, if the sun shines through the big window, you need to be concerned about your furniture and fabrics. Light-filtering window shades can reduce direct sunlight but someone outside can see into the room when lights are on. (I am from LA where privacy is a big concern.). Honeycomb window shades offer more privacy and also control sunlight. You could have honeycomb shades installed on each window and have a stationary drapery panel at each end or have the three center windows with a honeycomb shade and drapery panels covering the end windows (the lining should match the honeycomb shade color).

@felizlady - the latest arrangement was 7 days ago and so they're liking it. I like your thought that drapery lining should match shade color. Works well unless the shades are fiber, which would also look good in the room. We'll see where it goes.

We used to have sheer blinds (like Silhouettes) which worked very well for controlling the light while allowing us to see outside. My husband would like the same type but I think a fiber type shade would also look nice with panels. We are still liking the arrangement with the two blue chairs in front of the window. We just had another couple over and it worked well for conversation (although I wish the blue chairs would swivel). I will post again once I get the window treatments figured out ( or when I need more advice)!

You can convert those to swivels if you're DIY handy.

@decoenthusiaste The bottom of the blue chairs are curved/arched so I'm not sure how well adding a swivel would work. Its probably hard to tell from the pictures, but the front legs are slightly higher/taller than the back legs.

Probably a reinforcing center piece would have to be added to attach the mechanism. As I said, it could be done by someone who is good at modifying stuff since the chairs aren't designed to swivel already. Lots of DIY instruction videos for doing it on YouTube.
