Recently completed Round Ostrich Challenge

Our local guild members participated this year in a Round Ostrich Challenge set by our guild program leader. Instead of swapping the projects around, we each worked on our own. First we had to have a center block or medallion, the first round was a checkerboard, the second was Flying Geese, third was a plain fabric border, fourth was diamonds (which I skipped), and lastly a round of hand or machine applique. My center block was bought in a stack of butterfly blocks, circa 1930’s at a large flea market in Virginia. The final round has hand embroidery in the vine and raw edge applique for the leaves. I’m pleased with how it turned out and it hangs on a rack in my kitchen.

Teresa, I had never heard of a Round Ostrich Challenge and couldn't figure out how they came up with the 'ostrich' part so did some research. "It is similar to a round robin, except that, like an ostrich, it doesn't take flight, meaning you will be doing all of the rounds on your own quilt."

I like how you have displayed your beautiful quilt. Very elegant.

Thanks for that explanation, Sharon! We weren’t told that before we started - or at least I didn’t get that memo! I think the guild members will vote on the best of the bunch in December of this year. We’ll put them up on our web site to have the members vote. I don’t really do this sort of thing to win, I just enjoy participating and having a new wall hanging for my house. Even my son noticed it after I hung it and said he really liked it - unsolicited by me!

That rack now has at least 3 different quilts to change out during the year. And, I can make more! Recently I received the same type of quilt rack that will go in my dining room, so I can make more quilts to fit the new rack. It is also white and has a plate grove - my collection of tea cups and saucers will look good displayed on this dining room rack. I ordered it from Appletree Woodcrafters on Etsy (I think that’s the name of Tim’s company).
