Kitchen sink relocation

6 years ago

I'm about to move the drain line of my kitchen sink from the wall to a kitchen island almost 10 feet away.
So the 2 inch pvc drain would have to have a 2 and a half inch slope from beginning to end.
Is there enough "play" in the elbows and tees for me do this and for it to not leak? or other finer details I have to pay attention to when I do this task?

    You've got to get permission from inspection to install an AAV or a loop vent. Play in the elbows and "Ts" won't have any effect on the slope. Glue it up with the pitch and it'll be fine.

    From your tape line, it doesn't appear you have 48" between the perimeter cabinets and your island.

    thank you sir for your advice..you're right, it will be only that distance which will be 38"..im not worried as there will be no island cabinets on that side to open into perimeter cabinet doors

    38" is only good for a walkway with NO cabinets, appliances, etc., on either side of the walkway.

    If you have cabinets/appliances on either side, then you need more...

    • 42" for an aisle that only one person will ever work at -and- no thru-traffic to outside the Kitchen -or- there are cabinets/appliances on the aisle.
    • 48" for an aisle where more than one person will be working -or- there are cabinets/appliances on the aisle and it's a walkway
    • If that's a busy path (e.g., Mudroom/Garage to rest of home) plus cabinets/appliances on that aisle and it's a work aisle, then more would be better (51" to 54")
    • If there's seating, then even more needs to be added.

    Those aisle measurements, btw, are measured to/from the items sticking out into the aisle the farthest...appliance handles, counter edges, etc. They are not measured to/from cabinets as cabinet measurements only include the cabinet boxes, not door/drawer fronts, hardware, counter edges, etc.

    How wide is the island going to be? I'm asking because if you're moving your cleanup sink to the island and it's the only sink in your Kitchen, then you need an island at least 94" wide, with 111" much, much better. 94" is with a 30" sink base and the very barest minimum of workspace, which in most cases isn't enough, especially when trying to have both the Prep & Cooking Zones on the island.

    Where did 94" come from?

    1.5" counter overhang on one end

    + 1" support panel next to the DW if there are no cabinets on both sides

    + 24"W DW

    + 30"W sink base

    + 36"W cab to provide prep workspace on the non-DW side (bare minimum recommended)

    + 1.5" counter overhang on the other end

    =======

    94"

    Why would 111" be better? It would give you a bit more landing and work space next to the DW, provide more support for the counter on both sides of the DW, and provide you with more prep workspace (42" vs 36", much, much more useful):

    1.5" counter overhang on one end of the island

    + 12"W cabinet

    + 24"W DW

    + 30"W sink base

    + 42"W cab to provide prep workspace on the non-DW side

    + 1.5" counter overhang on the other end of the island

    =======

    111"

    This gives you 36" of counterspace on the Cleanup Zone side of the sink (side with DW) and 42" of counterspace on the Prep Zone side of the sink (side without the DW).

    Seating...will there be seating on the island? Will the island be at least 41.5" deep? You need that deep an island to provide the minimum recommended seating overhang (15"). With a cleanup sink in the island, 48" would be better to minimize splashing people seated at the island.

    Keep in mind that with the cleanup sink in the island, your dirty dishes will be front & center and on display for all to see. In addition, dirty dishes will be "in the face" of anyone sitting there (not pleasant).

    The island will also no longer be useful for larger baking/cooking projects, homework, science/craft projects, etc. The sink takes up too much space smack dab in the middle.

    Minimum island depth calculation:

    1.5" counter overhang in the front of the island

    + 24"D cabinets

    + 1" decorative door/end panel on the back of the island cabinets

    + 15" seating overhang (minimum of short-to-average height people)

    ======

    41.5"

    thanks buehl for the very detailed information you layed out..most of it matches the info that I have gathered to implement in my design
