The other leaf is held up by the "fourth" leg -- and as you can see from the first picture it's really thin and it won't stand up by itself if both leaves are down which makes it a good choice to slide into a closet. You said later and I know you know a lot of stuff would you guess 40s or 50s or a little earlier like 20s or 30s? I'm not sure what beast did that for I thought the same thing and I ALMOST passed it by because of that. But the store I bought it from (who has real antiques from time to time) paints a lot of furniture and generally black but most of it is that 80s pine stuff. By the way can you tell the wood? I'm no good at that.

Possibly walnut. My guess is a 1900-1930. Black paint is hard to strip. If softer wood the color remains. I know someone who stripped off black paint. She ended up using a black tinted stain to hide the black left behind by the paint.

Mahogany? It's a good table! Pointy...but pretty!

Agree....mahogany or possibly cherry....but suspect it's from the "everything mahogany" era in the late 20's early 30's.
Black paint is no worse than any other color. It's what's under the paint that makes it harder or easier to strip.

Thanks Izzy Mn and Linda -- I think it is going to be a really functional piece -- it's upstairs in my sunroom (where I have our "excess" TV) and where I sew and wrap presents and such. As a full square it will be a great sewing table and at Christmas will be much easier to wrap on it than on the hassock I currently wrap on. Plus the rest of the year it can hold a lamp and "stuff" next to the TV chair! In looking at it more, I do think it's probably 20s rather than 40s or 50s. But I love that Colonial Revival furniture of the between the war era through the 40s and have many pieces in my home. They seem to fit in well in my 20s foursquare craftsman. Linda and Izzy Mn -- I've taken some more pictures. It was like a "duh" moment as I thought how do I photo the underside without getting on the floor and shooting up -- and then it hit me -- it's a small table - turn it upside down -- I did. Hope this helps you in dating the table. The label BTW is for North American Van Lines so not a maker's label but a shipper's one.

It's such a great little table. I am wondering if it might be cherry wood. The wood does have a red hue to it. It's the fine grain that made me think walnut. But birch has a fine grain too but more yellowish undertones. I'm just guessing, I'm not an expert.

I think it's definitely older than 40's.....and maybe older than 20's. and the wood I see on the underside doesn't look like mahogany to me....but the legs do...or cherry. Is the top possibly veneer?...well actually most likely veneer! and probably book matched....under that damnable black paint!!!
Walnut is not what i would call a close grained wood like maple or birch or cherry or even poplar. And walnut can have many colors and does bleach out int he sun.....and one board can also be streaked with what is called heart wood.

Thank you both. I think I found a find but unfortunately the find isn't as great a find because of the paint, etc., but it will be a very useful table. And it's really perfect for the space as a "end" table and then I can utilize it for other things. Again, thank you. Based on other 20s - 40s furniture I own, when I turned it upside down, I thought perhaps it might be older.
