dining room help

Hi! I am interested in changing the look of this dining room. I inherited the wallpaper and would like to keep it. I am interested in a new rug but am having a difficult time knowing what would look best with the wallpaper. The room does get a bit of morning sun so fading could be an issue as I have noticed the fade on the present rug. I am going to change the lamp, picture and small decor. The casual French country/farmhouse look is more what I am leaning toward. If need be, painting the furniture is an option. Opinions on any or all especially rug choice is welcome.... thank you!

Beautiful room! The windows are stunning, have you thought about removing the window treatments or adding side panels so they can really be on full display?

As far as the rug, are there other colors you hope to incorporate besides blue and white? I think the pattern size is a nice compliment to the pattern size in your wallpaper.

Yes I have come to think a pattern seems necessary to carry the wallpaper. I previously had a solid ivory/cream textured rug and the room felt ‘flat’. Once I went with the patterned rug it helped but this rug is wool and after 6 years has really faded. I just am having a hard time knowing how strong of a pattern or what colors. I knew someone would address the valances... lol! I suppose I could remove them.... never gave that a thought. Right now I would prefer not to have floor length panels as I have three cats. I can envision the bottom of the panels collecting cat hair. The house is three stories and huge to try to keep up with cleaning as it is. Thank you for responding. I just feel like this room has good bones and could really look a lot better but it has been my hardest room by far to get it to come together.

I love the room as is! Window panels will definitely add a more casual vibe. I think a few ginger jars and a ceramic lamp with a white shade. How do you feel about having no rug?

Thank you, that’s encouraging! Panels have to come all the way to the floor right? Part of the problem as well is that the valances are attached to a board that spans the length of the windows. That board is attached to the wall space above the trim thus it would leave several screw holes in the wallpaper if removed. As far as a rug I definitely need one. One of the things they would do in the days of these old houses is put a cheaper wood in the middle of the room knowing rugs would cover. The middle of this room is wider plank pine.

Gorgeous house! Gorgeous room! I owned that exact same dining room table and chairs for many years. They have gone on to a new home but I still have the china cabinets. It all looks better in your wonderful dining room than it ever looked in any of my homes.

I have a few thoughts but I'm not a pro so . . . I think your rug works very well -- it compliments the fabulous wallpaper without stealing the show. What might make the room more interesting is an accent color that you use sparingly. I see yellow or mustard, but coral, green, rust, terracotta, etc. might appeal to you more. You could reupholster the chairs with a fabric that has that color in it, and use it in a couple of accessories -- a lamp, vase, tablecloth, etc. You could also replace your window treatments with a complimentary fabric. Not too much, just a few hints of color.

You might want to think about removing one or two furniture pieces so you don't have every corner filled. Do you have another place for the glass-fronted china cabinet? If so you can try moving the remaining pieces around and see if there is a better arrangement.

May you enjoy many delicious meals with family and friends in your wonderful dining room, Elayne.

Yes I agree reupholstered chair pads would be helpful! I like the idea of mustard but any would work. Perhaps I’ll just keep looking for a rug and see what colors it may have. This all started as I need to find a new rug. The present on is badly faded. Thank you fir the kind words!
