Go with a taller window if you can. And as low to the counter as you can. I like the idea of a fixed center and opening windows on either side.

Countertop height is usually 36" and the distance between base and wall cabinets 20". We will have 9 foot walls and our kitchen window is 3 ft tall with the top at 6' 8". I chose a slider window for more airflow. Here is a picture of my husband standing at the rough opening today.

The window is centered over the sink.

@sushipup1: how low is "as low to the counter as you can?" Flush/flat? 2"? 6"? Is there a practical "lowest?"

@Brandie May: So your window starts 8" up from the counter? What were the factors you considered to pick that height?

And is there a practical "highest? Or highest desirable?

How low will depend on the type of window you install. Bottom of frame can be level with the cabinet.

So I just had my favorite local window supplier quote me a 3-lite slider with 1/4-1/2-1/4. (Just learned what those terms meant). So fixed in the middle and sliders on either end. I think I prefer sliders to casements, to keep the screens on the outside.

48"x96", so it would be 6" above counter and 6" below ceiling, which gives me a little wall to play with on all sides. $572 with tax. Here's the rendering (sans kitchen, of course):
