Best winter care?

I'm in Zone 6a, Cleveland area. I have a pair of hydrangea macrophylla Star Gazers (old and new wood blooms) that are bookended by hydrangea paniculata (variety unknown), which are old wood only. Both are three years old and doing well, but last year's Star Gazers lost their buds bring a late spring freeze and I would like to prevent that this year by incorporating better winter care and protection for them. They gave north and get late afternoon sun in winter. If we have a good snow season they get covered but they're also exposed to the brunt of winds.

From what I'm reading, I should wait until the ground freezes, then add something like Sweet Peet (I don't have my own compost), then cover that with a foot of shredded leaves and then wrap in burlap. (I would wrap the four as a group, not each individual plant.) Does that sound like an ideal plan?

Thank you!!
