Wall Decor Help

Not sure what do do with this wall. I will be custom framing the 3 prints, they don’t fit standard size. Metal? Wood? Placement? I have a dark wood ledge 36” I can hang above the chest to put framed art also.

I would do dark frames. I would hang them over the chair and remove the clock

Throw the clock out there is no way they are decor items IMO maybe a nice grandfsther clock in an entry . We all have more reminders of time than we need as for the pictures that wall is too large for them even with larger frames so get a nice single a large piece of art for there and find another spot for those prints.Maybe move the one from the DR to there and get a larger one for the DR BTW hang the pieces lower in fact in the DR the piece can even be a bit lower than in the LR since the art is viewd while seated but at least hang so the center of the art is at eye level which usually is about 60” from the floor. The cahndelier needs to be lowered too

Don't throw your clock away, put it over the buffet.

Really IMO reminding guests of the time is just plain rude and I think one clack which is already in the space is quite enough.

Hi Chris, I agree with finding something else for the clock, but I also think you should use what you like. Patricia has a good suggestion regarding wall art...the center of it should be about 57-60 inches from the floor. That includes a grouping of art like your 3 prints. If you're hanging art above furniture, about 5-6 inches above usually works well.

Have you gone to a good custom frame shop or are you planning on framing yourself with a custom frame size or did you go to a commercial frame shop like Michael's for advice?

First thing I notice is that your dining room picture needs a bigger mat. It feels out of proportion.

Here is a chart that provides a good rule of thumb choice for mat size.

Frames should generally be narrower than the mat - never the same size as that makes your brain focus on the two vying elements and takes away from the picture.

There are also many exceptions to these rules and getting that perfect balance that complements your art is truly an art form all on it's own.

These mats are far wider than traditionally used, but what a statement!

Here is one that is absolutely perfect with a frame that would be considered way to heavy for the size of the picture and has no mat at all.

It works because it is replicating the oil painting the girl is looking at,

Here is another example of what a difference a good frame and mat can make

Often you can use a standard frame with the right mat.

A professional frame professional may be able to give you ideas that you would never think of for your three pictures.

I rarely recommend mirrors, but since you have a bay window, I would put a beautiful antique or interesting mirror there to reflect light coming in from the bay--almost like another window. Find something with a great frame in the same wood finish as your buffet or an antique metal finish. Small images of famous works don't have much impact.

I'm with the other no-clock people. Clocks are for kitchens, not for relaxation spaces.

@Jennifer Hogan - thank you for taking the time to share the knowledge! I
guess my pano picture is distorted, making the picture you mention look off, the mat is wider than it looks. It was done by a professional. I’m very intrigued by the idea of oversized mats for my 3 prints. They are sentimental reminders of our afternoon at the Rijkmuseum in Amsterdam.
I had no idea my clock would evoke such emotion! I just like the pop of yellow metal there, and I had it on hand.

@housegal - I love using mirrors! But finding the right one... and as I said 👆, those prints bring back fond memories. I do have a custom frame shop that I will ask for ideas.

There are many ways you can use those prints. Here are just a few ideas from a design of ours.
