I think this would be perfect for Big Stitch using embroidery floss or 12 wt thread! It would be easy to stitch a single line through the solid fabrics from one end of the runner to the other end. Big Stitch is hand stitching also w/o the use of “11 to an inch” tiny quilting stitches. Just search for Big Stitch and you should see some examples. And, you could change the color of the stitches at any point - best to do it randomly because you “meant for it to be that way.” I don’t use batting in runners or placemats where I will be sitting things on it that should sit flat. You could use flannel instead.

Pretty runner, Bev. I don't know anything about sashiko, so I can't comment. I like my runners to have a little batting, so I use Thermore Ultra-Thin batting. I understand that it is the batting that is used for quilted jackets and the like. It gives some substance to the runner but not enough to tip wine glasses, for instance.

Thank you, ladies. I did a simple big stitch quilting, using embroidery floss since that is what I had on hand. I used several different colors, but they are hard to see in the pic. There are three rows grouped together. Next time I'll spring for some cotton pearl. I got tired of dealing with three strands at one time.
