Re-design Office...Help!

Single dad that needs help! Ok, I'm in for the long haul working from home and need to re-think my home office. It's currently a mashery of stuff. Would love your thoughts on ways to improve. The issue I have is that the entry is an "angled" entry. I can only think to have the desk in the middle of the office. Thoughts?

Ok dad. Can you post a layout of the room? And what is important to you to have in this room so it functions as you like. Are you open to new furniture or are you wanting to work with what you have? And how important is it for you to be at your desk looking at the French doors?

Well, when the doors are closed and my little ones are staring at me, I feel like I'm on the today show (not always great) -- so not super important. Here is a layout of the room.

On your plan, it is showing windows on the right side but not seeing that in your photos or am I looking at the photos incorrectly? If there are no windows on that wall, have you tried the desk on the wall where the shelving units are with the back of the desk facing that wall and then moving the shelving onto the wall across. I think there would still be room for your chair to stay in the current corner with shelving on that wall.

I guess the plan is actually flipped. On the right side, there is a wall w/ nothing on it.

So do we go by your photos which seem to show only windows on one wall behind the desk or do we go by the plan that is showing windows on the side, too?

Oh, Steve, you lucky thing, that is actually a large room for an in-home office!

I will totally defer to tedbixby on the design aspect.

I work with two screens, and now with COVID I often work from home too.

In general (even before COVID) I think an L shaped desk works best.

Please carefully think about what you do in that office, and how much desk space you need.

Do you actually write? Do you write with all sorts of reference material on the desk as well to refer to?

This will inform how long the arms (legs?) of your L will be.

Is the laptop a temporary thing?

Do you think you will soon get a regular PC, with a tower, etc?

    Do you have a printer/scanner?

An external hard drive? A battery back-up?

No, I am not your IT guy.

I am just asking to know if there needs to be a place for all these computer accoutrements.

Do you need a file cabinet? How big of one?

The big honking 5 drawer? A smaller two drawer? Do you want to get a nice wood one? Or just a metal one?

Do you want it right there where you sit, or do you want to use the closet next to the bathroom as your office supply cabinet. Or where you will put your honking 5 drawer file cabinet?

Will you have clients in? Do you need two chairs in there and a little table too?

Do you need an easy chair for yourself? Do you want (omg, omg!) a recliner? (Yes, we do age!)

Or just a great chair with an ottoman.

If you can't use the closet as your office supply storage, you can easily use your bookshelves and or build shelves and have attractive organized closed storage.

You can also have drawers under your desk. Or a file cabinet. Whatever you prefer.

I did a pano of the room as you are looking in.

What are you looking to redo?

I happen to love the rug in there. Would you prefer to face the window. I feel like the rug there with a desk. Add a nice lamp and maybe some built in in place of those shelves and a couch as well. Would also loveee to see some moldings in there

How can you position the desk so that the cords are not all across the floor? That's where I'd put the desk - basically float it. A bookcase unit against the wall with no windows and a small loveseat on the wall that has the entry doors.

This unit might be too much, but notice the storage at the bottom along with the display at the top.
