Embarrassing Need For Help re/ Pierced earrings....Please.

So, my granddaughter talked me into piercing my ears....for the FIRST time ...ever ! I know, so late in life. šŸ™„šŸ˜ That was in Feb. In March, one fell out and forever lost. That lobe closed up entirely. It was the beginning of Covid , so I left it. I’m ready to ..carefully... mask up and have it re-pierced. I want to use this larger CZ stud. I recently put another one in the other ear, replacing the tiny beginner stud. Tiny is the advised way to go. I know . What projected harm could I do if I use this one?

I don't know, but back in the old days we used to get our ears pierced with the training studs which actually had close to huge pegs (is that the term?) in them--the part that goes through the lobe.

When you were done with your training phase and moved onto regular pegged earrings, those pegs were much smaller.

So maybe no harm is using the larger one, if we are talking about the same thing.

I hope it goes well for you! Kind of exciting, but be careful of course.

Edit. I didn't see the photo when I posted. I think you want a small doo-dad on the front so the weight of the doo-dad doesn't pull down during the training phase.

You don't want anything large or heavy enough to pull on your ear lobe and make the hole larger or distorted in shape. I doubt that is too heavy -- but it could get caught or pull more easily than a plain stud and that could cause some bleeding if not healed yet. If you can be very careful when pulling on or off sweaters and such, brushing your hair, etc -- I think you should be okay. That's just trying to apply common sense to what could go wrong -- don't know if there might be another reason.

So, where does one go to get an ear pierced these days? I have one that closed up in recent years and I would like to be able to wear earrings again.

Ahh...pierced ears....I remember I did my own in junior high. Still got ā€˜em - one in each ear - and no additional piercings since. Sorry to go off track but the topic reminded me of a younger time.....šŸ™‚

I did my own too. I kept thread in the holes until they healed.

Being such an expert, I was 12 or 13, I pierced numerous friends’ ears. A little ice to numb, a little alcohol to clean the lobe and the needle. We all lived, no infections, no lawsuits.

You should be fine with the studs you have.

Martinca, I highly recommend either gold or silver small hoops like the picture below until the ears are fully healed. All you have to do other than cleanse the area, is to move the earrings a few times a day making sure skin doesn't try to heal around them. Easy. These are feminine, classic, and impossible to lose. I wore mine fulltime for 20 years, until I lost one. :)

2katz, ditto the same here in Jr. High! The first time it was done by a friend's mother, needle and thread. Bad idea, one got infected and I had to let them heal sans hole. Then I went the unhygeienic way of self-piercing. :) Did you use the hoops with as needed on one end?

Edited to add, these hoops are so lightweight it doesn't make the hole stretch, and they're very comfy to sleep in. I

The cv might be too heavy in front and pull out although it would be easy to give it a daily twist as I was told to do so many years ago. I went to a department store ( Gimbels), stood in line, sat down, the lady went poke, poke and that was it. I took one starter earring out too soon and it got infected. I asked my sons pediatrician to repierce it. The holes go in slightly different directions!

I also had a roommate who pierced ears with needles sterilized with a match and then doused in alcohol. I remember cringing as I watched it.

Today there are many professional piercers who will pierce more than your ears!

Wow! I applaud you for piercing your ears at this point in your life. I've never pierced mine and I probably never will because earrings don't show with my hair style. I don't know why I never did it when I was younger.

if you do decide to go somewhere, go to a tattoo shop.

I have tried to push a post through and it does hurt. I am one of those fair skinned folks with lots of blood vessels in my ears -- and I guess more nerve endings. I bled like crazy and wound up being glad my mom required me to have a doctor do mine. Being at the mall would have been terrible.

I second Oakley’s suggestion of a simple elegant hoop. The hoop doesn’t pull on the lobe, as its weight is even and contained. And yes, move the hoop around from time to time.

I forgot to add one important thing about hoops for us "mature" women. Earlobes tend to get thicker on some of us. Hoops will accommodate all earlobe sizes.

The jewelry shops in malls have a quick gun that gets it done. Quick, no mess. The earring is insert at the time the hole is made.

Good thing I looked here. I haven't worn earrings in so long. I'd better put some in or my ears will probably grow closed!

I know. Mine are getting more difficult to put in because I wear them so seldom now!

I did mine at age 65 to show my granddaughter that it wouldn't hurt. What we do for our grandkids! But I'm so glad I had them done, should have done it years ago! See if you can push one of those really tiny starter studs through, then try and increase the size. It may feel completely closed but I'd bet it isn't.

Oh! Thank you all so much! Did not expect much response...such a trivial thing, and at my age! Sharon, you made me happier with my decision. Before now, they seemed like too much to fiddle with as one who doesn’t wear jewelry daily...pre Covid. Thinking back, I realized that, opposite of you Ms.Fun, I always end up with my hair behind my ears, and a shiny or sparkle there does look so nice. Bbeeez, Yes, a tattoo place did the original. Oak and Nuts, had not considered hoops, thanks, but ones in pic are almost invisible . Now after taken the plunge, I wanna go big or go home...ha! Wish I could. Sigh, you all have convinced me ...I guess I’d best get starters...again. Phooey .

Ded: ā€œ.... piercers who will pierce more than your ears!ā€œ Goody! Maybe my nether regions? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£. PS. is everyone sneering at my emojis? Seems I’m the only one using them. I should stop, maybe?

Well, there’s always your belly button , nose or eyebrow. Please don’t do the septum . It always looks like a ring in a bull’s nose to me. šŸ‘‚

I have a little subtle pair styled like this.

They could be plain good quality gold, or white gold depending on your preference. I wear them constantly and sleep in them without ever knowing they are there. This year in particular, I take them out only when I have a hair appointment, and one day last month when I knew the periodontist was going to do a CT of my jaw ;0)

I haven't really been many places to need a more substantial earring where I might want something a little more dramatic and these are so comfortable I just don't think to change them. A post with back? I'm not sure how comfortable I'd find that for sleeping, I'm a nesting and pillow person, somewhat burrowed in at night and think I might be conscious of the earring.

Morz8, those are gorgeous. Ded , you did know I was joking , right.? My family reminds me to.be careful trying to be funny online, texting, etc. Doesn’t always come off as intended.

    Thanks, Fun 😘

Today I made a quick return to Nordstrom, passing Claire’s along the way. Yep. I got so tired of thinking about I just walked in and gotter-done. Yes, Finallyhime, Wham, bam. Got the cheapest safe ones they had, knowing I’d never wear starter earrings again.

Sometimes just talking it out and getting your replies helps , be it trivial or serious. Love it!

    Good job! Got it done!

Glad you got it done. I have three holes in each lobe and the cartilage of my upper ear is pierced. I've gone years without wearing earrings in those holes, and they do tend to close up a bit, but I've always been able to get a stud or small ring back in if I just work with it a bit.

Earrings are such fun. I've had my ears pierced for many decades, starting when I was probably five or six.

I wear tiny hoops like those pictured 24/7/365. I take them out and wear other earrings from time to time, but they are my everyday earrings. @Oakley where did that picture come from? I need new hoops and I’m having a hard time finding the tiny ones I like.

I haven't worn earrings in probably almost a year. Still, I was able to get a stud through the hole by working it a bit. Try with a magnifying mirror and work it around a bit, you might be able to get a post through the hole. Many times I swear my holes have grown shut and then I manage to find the channel.
