Thermador Speed Oven review

Hi

I am considering Thermador 30" Speed Oven (MC30WP) for my new kitchen but can't find any updated reviews. If you have one, do you like it? What made you choose the Thermador vs. the Advantium? Thanks for your help!

@dcraider, thank you for the thorough review. I have back issues and also want to install the speed oven above waist height. It would probably be better for my kitchen design if it was installed under the counter in the island. Otherwise, I'll be giving up some cabinet and counter space for it. I was wondering how challenging it's been to get hot food out of it since you installed it under your counter on the island? I'm not having any regular ovens under the cooktop due to my back issues. I will likely have side opening ovens from Thermador.

@jj mekai curious if you made any decisions? Im deciding on the same. I’m very interested in the Thermador speed oven but you don’t see a ton of reviews. I’m deciding between getting it with a 36” range oven or doing it stacked with a 30” wall oven. I also considered putting it under the cabinet (if I do it with the range) but think I’ll like it better on the wall. I am curious though how annoying it is to have to lean over and get food out. I had a microwave under the counter but that was a drawer so it was great and convenient. I worry about this being under the counter esp with my tall husband and as much as we use it for the microwave it could get challenging.

@n129tepper, I have some time to make decisions. I'm sure about having a speed oven with a steam oven installed underneath it. I will also have two, convection ovens as well, probably with side opening doors. I was pretty much decided on all Thermador, including the Freedom cooktop and then I started reading reviews complaining about very loud cooling fans in the ovens to the point of it significantly affecting conversation and TV watching. I'll have to research it more because noise is an issue with the kitchen being open to the dining room and family room. I'm hoping to get more input from owners.

@JJ Mekai oh wow I had not heard about the loud fans but I will have to look into that now. I did finally decide to forget the speed oven and just go with double ovens and a range top. I saw the speed oven in person and it's very small. Won't really function as that 2nd oven I was hoping for. If you hear anything more about the fan noise let me know! I will do the same.

@n129tepper, I like the idea of the speed oven because I don't use a microwave. My microwave is really just for guests. With the speed oven, I have a small, convection oven I can use for smaller items and it won't take long to preheat. Then, it's also a microwave for guests. We live in a lovely destination area so our guests often come for weeks at a time. The other thing I thought about was putting a microwave in the pantry room. Do keep us updated if you find more information about oven cooling fan noise levels. Apparently, it's now an issue with all high end ovens. I just have to learn how much of an issue with which brands. It's necessary to have the cooling fan for the electronics.

@JJ Mekai Did you make the decision. I am thinking of doing steam or speed oven stacked with a 30” wall oven. Also considering steam oven stacked with a 30” wall oven and drawer MW. Wanted to go with all Wolf but reading really bad reviews about the wolf wall ovens.

I am also in the planning stages and finalizing the appliances and cabinetry in our kitchen remodel. Thermador is also my choice for the wall ovens, 30” Professional with steam oven above. I also am really intrigued with the fact that the main oven has a rotisserie. Their steam ovens have the largest capacity on the market, compared to Wolf, Miele and Bosch. The reason your post caught my interest, is that I am now deciding on whether to get their speed oven to install in the island or to the right under the counter of the wall oven stack. I like the idea of having the ability to use the speed as a microwave and an extra oven as I really only use a microwave to reheat, etc… With the new steam oven though, reheating will now mostly be handled by the superior steam oven’s ability to reheat leftovers, like when I use one of my soups vide appliances.
Originally I was going to go with the Thermador Pro-Grand 60” range with the smaller oven cavity as a steam oven and a warming drawer below that, but the burner output and the reviews threw me off, so I decided to go with the best rated/reviewed no frills (electronics that can go awry) BlueStar 48” range-top with 24” griddle to use as a faux lateral French-Top keeping the ability to do Sunday pancakes and bacon or weekday quesadillas. The griddles have two separately controlled 15k btu infrared sides, so I can also use them as simmering burners or as finishing burners, also when using both sides of the griddles at the same time, it can handle a giant carbon steel paella pan! LOL
I’d really like to know what you ended up doing here and your thoughts. Wishing you the best!

@sunarakaa, haven't made any decisions yet. Our building plans are delayed due to so many supply issues.

UGH. I feel your angst. I am now being told to put in my orders now and maybe, just maybe, I'll receive this or that in 6 months, 8 months to a year!

Very disheartening, to say the least.

    Good luck to you.

@Jody Dietz, ours is a new build and our septic installer can't even get parts to install the septic system. He says maybe by early next summer. He has over 100 customers waiting for a septic system install.

@Jody Dietz my all existing appliances are Thermador and I am very happy with them but not hearing some good reviews now- a-days, also not a very big fan of their gray glass style. I definitely want Subzero in my kitchen but not sure about gray look next to the subzero refrigerator.

Our Thermador double wall oven has very loud cooling fans.

How about stacking wall oven, steam oven and speed oven on top? will speed be too high to use?

Following as well. We have a double thermador oven from 20 years ago and can attest the fans are very loud. We can have conversations but they are definitely noticeable and not relaxing. Not sure if it has changed for more recent models.

We had a Thermador double wall oven from the early 2000s that we replaced last year with their new top end model. The dans are definitely louder than our old one but we don’t eat in the kitchen so it’s a non issue for us. I can’t tell you how amazing the new oven is btw, we love it! And the right hinge design - I can’t figure out why any oven has a door that opens down!

I just got my speed oven as part of my all-Thermador appliance package. Ordered in Sept '21 and got it a full year later.

The model I have is the MC30WS/01.

I haven't used it for more than the microwave so far. What I like about it is that the microwave is powerful and cooks things a lot more evenly than my Panasonic countertop 1200W does. It works really well.

Fan noise, yes there is fan noise, but I don't find it excessive. The heat has to get vented out, and my countertop was just as loud. No problem there.

What is rather annoying are the sounds this thing makes. They are loud, and just over the top. The settings have a supposed volume level. That same setting by the way is on my other wall oven (also Thermador) and on that, it works. On the speed oven, it does nothing. I already taped something over the speaker grill, it doesn't really help too much.

The on/off is weird. After a while being idle, the appliance shuts off. I then have to push "On/Off" to put the appliance into Standby mode, and then push "On/Off" again(!) to start using it.

The customization menu overall is very weak compared to all my other Thermador appliances. Also there's no integration with the phone app.

Would I buy it again? Yes because it works well. But I would hope Thermador puts in better firmware, it really needs some work.

I just installed my Thermadore Speed oven. The chimes and start up tones are really annoying. Loud enough to wake up a sleeping household. I ended up putting a layer of silver duct tape over the speaker opening on control panel (see photos) to quiet it, since there is no mute and sound levels set to lowest really didn't help. I might try 2 layers to quiet some more. The branding logo animation and tune is ridiculous every time you turn on, waiting for it to complete (several seconds) before you can enter anything.

There are several steps: touch start, (if sleep mode wait for Thermadore logo promo tune), turn dial selector to microwave, touch panel, scroll, select, then touch check mark, then press start to just microwave at a power level.

There is an actual broil electrical element on the top of the interior, making cleaning the upper surface of inside difficult, unlike my old Dacor speed oven that had quartz boil elements, flush glass covers. Our unit is set a bit high since we are both tall, but with the door folding down, I can't really reach the back wall for cleaning. And you have to be really careful using convection, especially if shorter, about reaching in and not touching the door insides which are oven hot.

We will primarily use for microwave and as warming oven, although I used to use Dacor speed oven for small baking tasks like you would use a toaster oven.

Totally agree with all your comments. We mostly find the start up annoying to select "on" twice, cannot mute the chimes at all (level one just as loud as level 5) and panel goes dark, not displaying time. When you are in settings, clock stops and has to be reset to correct time. The ovens work well as far as heating etc but the tech bites. We had the supplier replace the panel on the top microwave and that resolved nothing. Frustrating after waiting 12 months for a very expensive appliance.

Our 3-year old Thermador speed oven stopped working today. Waiting to see what warranty can cover but it would be 3 weeks before a technician can come out and charge a $130 "Consultation fee". Quite disappointed as it is not overused. We have only used it to bake maybe once every other week and microwave food about 5 times a week. It also does not "pop" popcorn, just burns it, and we have tried all microwavable popcorn brands on the market to accommodate this expensive appliance to no avail. Lastly the turntable is a pain to keep clean. It started to look rusty (but not actually rusty) after a few rounds of baking.

I don't think you are supposed to use microwave popcorn in a speed oven. I believe you are supposed to use regular popcorn. The speed oven will integrate real heating alongside the microwave, which I don't think the bags in microwave popcorn are designed to handle. But I could be wrong.
