Great late season photos! My June’s ( I have 6, it’s all your fault ; ) still look good too along with my Mouse Ears, tough plants. Autumn Frost looks great too, the rest are on their way to dormancy. Spring is toooooo far away.......

thanks Sherry!..I've gone on and on about certain hostas Lol..especially June and Krossa Regal..I think soon my 2020 hostas will be gone..I was in the kitchen and heard a weather forecaster say 27°..I didn't catch all of the details..just hearing that number was enough 😪 ..

NW, remember that the cold dormancy is important for next year's beautiful hosta show. You know I will miss my hostas, too. Your autumn color display is exquisite. Wow! And your Junes are perfect! Thank you for sharing!

utog..thank you!..and you're right nature has cycles..we can't change that..my winter is longer than I want and I would enjoy a milder climate..maybe someday..until then I'm grateful for my home and garden..many people never have the opportunity to live in such a pretty place..

Thanks for the nice photos. Amongst the fall color change it's amazing how some plants almost resist it! But maybe, when it comes to hosta, it is the thicker leaved hosta that changed later?

I haven't heard of the lantana annual. I looked it up and it says it likes some sun. What the pros and cons of that plant?

newhostalady..thank you!..I agree the thicker hosta leaves seem to retain their color longer..I love that squirrels seem to ignore lantana..the leaves feel rough..maybe that's why..the blooms are fragrant..it has a nice bushy shape..it would have more blooms if I could give it more sun..but in my yard that's the best I can do..I get excited for even one bloom Lol..you should try one next summer..

the hole the electric company dug in my compost bin..the workers were kind and tidy..even in this picture I hate the neighbor's lattice..also their rocks, fake greenery, tent etc..😞

The squirrels leave the lantana plant alone? Well that's a good thing! I will look for it in my garden centre next spring. I may have to venture out further to go to a large nursery as two nearby garden nurseries closed in 2019. Now we are left with only one. Fortunately, that one is very close to my home. I have to wonder whether the two nurseries that closed down were happy that they closed down prior to covid. It was a crazy year for gardening and they may have lost out on a good opportunity.

I know what you mean when you say "I get excited for even one bloom." I think that's what gardeners do---just happy to see one more of anything in our gardens!

That's some hole they dug in your garden. It helps a lot if the workers are kind and tidy.

I can't see a tent in the neighbor's garden, but the lattice doesn't look professionally done from what I can make out in the picture.

I don't know how one comes to a place of peace when dealing with a neighbor---whether it's the individual or their property. A close friend of mine has dealt with a very difficult immediate neighbor for years. It has caused her a lot of anxiety and unhappiness. Not a good situation to be in. She loves her home and property too.

I am happy that you appreciate your property and that we get to "share" it with you through your pictures! Had we bought my father-in-law's property after he passed away, I could have had tons of hosta and lots of nature around me. But timing wasn't right and I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

the squirrels ruined my coleus and begonias this year but the lantana was fine..I enjoyed growing lantana..I'll get some every year from now on..and I'll enjoy each and every precious bloom Lol..

it makes me sad to see nurseries close..they did miss an opportunity for some good business..but who in the world could've predicted what would happen?..fortunately you still have a nursery nearby..

you can see the "tent" (my husband's term) in this pic..to us it's an eyesore..they tacked their lattice onto the fence in about 10 minutes..it was definitely not a professional job..I'm certainly not the first person to have an undesirable neighbor..I can truly sympathize with your friend..my niece has a bad neighbor too 😪..

everyone can look back at their life and think "what if"..but we all do what we think is best at the time..in CA I looked at a guest house for rent..it was beautiful..I was ready to go home and start packing..the owner says "I have someone coming today that was ahead of you..if they don't want it it's yours..of course they took it..I thought about that place for a long time..but I've had an even more wonderful home for 15 years now so no need to feel sorry for myself..🙂

It will be OK. Although I do agree that your neighbor’s aesthetic is rather Lowes-catalog-ish, it is their home. I cannot cast criticism of their tent and tackiness, for I have had temporary plastic greenhouses from time to time and generally do not maintain my yard to tidy standards. We intentionally bought our home in a neighborhood without an HOA because we did not want to be fined or forced to keep our lawn a certain height. In a way, my yard is the only place I can be free. I pity my poor neighbors for having my yard and home to look at.

you're right..I'll be fine!..my taste is different than my neighbors..I've decided that I will not allow them to stop me from enjoying my garden..I don't pity your neighbors Lol..many people avoid a neighborhood with an HOA..we have a very permissive HOA..it seems that anything goes..my yard isn't perfect..with my neighbors it's not only their choices that the long term neighbors don't care for it's also their attitude..in a perfect world each of us would have complete privacy..

Yes I am lucky to have a decent nursery close by. But if I had a hosta nursery close by . . . then I could have been even happier!

Now that "tent" could transform into a really nice solarium, 3 season room or screened in porch? Maybe that's what they have in mind? I don't remember you mentioning talking to them. Is there a possibility they are really nice people who have some good plans for their property and house? (Rereading your previous post, I see you say they don't have a good attitude. That's too bad.)

You're right about going back into the past and wondering if this or if that. I think it's just human nature.

I've always been mindful of my neighbors. I kind of feel like I have a responsibility to keep my neighborhood looking good and being aware of my neighbors. I am happy with my immediate neighbors and how they keep their properties. One of my next door neighbor's property could use some pruning and landscaping, but she has a lawn service that cuts her grass and things look clean and neat, and I like that. She is a single mother with an important and responsible job and I know she means to improve her property (she says so), but lacks the time. It helps to know that she tries to do better. It's wonderful when you can have a good respectful relationship with neighbors.

Looking on the bright side it is quite likely the new neighbours put up the lattice just for the work on the utilities. They probably did not know how extensive the work could be. It is good that the utility workers are mindful of causing the least disruption possible.

Even in the country there are no guarantees. Friends down the road had their new neighbours put their pig pen right against the property line. I am sure my friends were thinking why didn't we build on the middle instead of to one side of our lot. The pig pen was really close to them. Lol at least you can't smell yours!

peren..nope..the lattice has been there since sometime in May..they don't want any of the neighbors to see into their yard..actually I deal with smells too!..they don't clean up after their 2 dogs..

newhostalady..our back property line borders 4 homes..one still has the same owner..the other 3 homes had the same owners too until last year..I have 3 new neighbors..just one unpleasant one..

Good neighbors are important and make a world of difference. We've had several older people living on our street---they being the original owners from 1962. All of them were really nice and respectful people. Now we only have one original homeowner left, So as new owners move in, there is a mixture of ages on our street with no age group dominating. I kind of like that.

But nicholsworth, it could be worse! The friend I mentioned with the bad neighbor had had to put in security cameras (as suggested by the police); there have multiple calls in to the police; she took anxiety medication for a while; and the neighbor has played music so loud all day every day for days at a time! There are no neighbors behind them and the neighbor on the other side of this neighbor is too afraid of the man to complain! It's been years!

newhostalady..you're right..it could be much worse..I don't think they would harm us..they sit in their tent if they're out..we don't see them much..2 of the 4 homeowners in back were original owners..(1979 or 1980)..a 3rd one in back (still there) has been here 29 years..the 4th moved in shortly after we did..things were fine for a long time..then in less than a year 3 new neighbors..we'll adjust..but it's been tough..
