They need to go dormant and stay dormant so storing somewhere that remains around freezing or slightly higher is ideal. If your garage temps can drop seriously below that, you might want to consider wrapping the pots in bubble wrap. And avoid too high a temp as well......no more than 45F, as that could encourage them to emerge from dormancy too early. Light is not important when the plant is dormant. And don't let them go completely dry......soil should remain just barely moist.

Light won't hurt - it's just not necessary while they are dormant.

Root are the most cold vulnerable part of the plant. In the ground they are protected by the insulating properties of the soil mass surrounding them. Grow in a container, they do not have that protection and can be exposed to very cold ambient air surrounding the roots. So you want to make sure the roots - the container itself - is protected against the cold.
