Help with reporting moldy plant

Hi,I got a 2 snake plants about 3 or so weeks ago. I left them how they came and only watered one because it seemed dry. Well today I checked them and both had white mold growth on the top of the soil. I took them out of the pots they were in, and it seems one of the plants may have some root rot, (these are my first live plants) both the plants smelled a bit off when I took them out (sort of like rusty iron/metal, not sure how to describe it). I'm trying to figure what I can do if anything to save them?

Also to note, I went to home depot to pick up some succulent mix as well as new plastic terra cotta pots as that is all they had.

In general, plants get terribly overwatered in chain stores and kept in low light, a disastrous recipe for any succulent. It looks like you are doing the right thing so far. Unpot it, let it dry a bit, clean off the mold, repot it in fresh soil with good drainage and dont water in for 10 days.

Dust with a little baking soda to help kill the fungus. Any soft rot must be removed on the roots. Looks like a classic case of over watering. Once fungus rot sets in, sometimes it is too late. I think you have a good chance of saving this one.
