I hate rugs in kitchens if you must just use the one by the garage door IMO just tripping hazards and one more thing to clean.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting, yes I am fine with just one rug by the garage door. Do you have a rug style/color suggestion?

Agree on the oddity of rugs in a kitchen. I was told ages ago a rug at outside doors really keeps the dirt tracked in, down. We are shoeless inside but still there are always THOSE TIMES. I also have a highly cushioned mat in front of my sink. I stand there for long periods of time certain times of the year and find it very helpful on my knees and hips.

@arcy_gw as I mentioned in my original post, I wear orthopedic shoes in the main work area of the kitchen, so a rug is not necessary in that space. I am hoping for someone to offer color and style suggestions for the rug I am replacing that is coming in from the garage.

@jck910 Thank you for the suggestions; I appreciate that very much. There is plenty of pattern going on in there already.

I’d probably just get a water hog mat (I think that’s what they’re called) from L.L. Bean.

@Sammy re: hog mat, I actually have one of those just outside the kitchen, in the garage. Works great for the garage.

If the idea is to keep dirt and debris from being tracked into the house, I’d go with the waterhog.

By the garage door, I see that I could go with a smaller rug (2x3'11", perhaps), instead of a runner.

Reading comments, I am exploring low pattern options. Would one of these look good?
