Our present house doesn't have a covered porch. I put one of those rubber maid boxes on the side

for package delivery. You can even get models that function as seating. I have a delivery sign on mine so they know to put the packages in it.

It's hard to say what would look good without seeing more of the front of your house, but something like this might work:

It looks like anything similar to any of the pics I posted above could work and look nice. Depends on what you want, what your budget is, etc.

I kind of like the last one best, as it would be balanced by the garage extending beyond the plane of the main part of the house.

I don't think every house needs a covered porch. Yours looks fine without one. Just replace your baskets with more substantial and taller planters. Packages can be placed just behind them so they can't be seen from the street, and you can decorate the planters for each season.

It wouldn't have been a dealbreaker for me if the price was right, if I loved the interior and the location. But I would be looking at adding something in the porch area, because with no covering over the front door, it doesn't look very welcoming to me - like guests would be standing in the rain waiting for you to answer the door.

Don't go mucking up the front of the house with a porch. It looks beautiful!

You will get used to not having a porch by finding ways to do what you need to do for packages, groceries and holidays.

I’m on the fence on whether or not it needs one...just like the idea of a place for packages/groceries, a shelter for visiting guests while they wait and a place for decorations so they don’t get destroyed by the elements. Funny thing is...7 years ago when we bought our first house, a front porch was on my “must have“ list and I probably wouldn’t have considered a house without one. But now I prioritize different things...like a good house for entertaining and a nice backyard space. This new one has a four seasons room, heated inground pool, patio and big yard for the kids to play.

@Olychick i like a lot of the designs you posted! The last one is very pretty. I just fear the price tag on a porch that spans the entire length of the front would be very high.

What do you think about a smaller option, like these one? Would they look strange (unbalanced) considering the way the garage on our house juts out?

@calidesign love the idea of planters that change with the seasons, front porch or not! Do you think they would get destroyed by rain/snow/etc? They’re so pretty and I’d hate to ruin them.

Here’s a couple other questions...

• Do you think we should add shutters to the new house? I’m wondering if maybe the windows are too close together for that...

• Do you think we should add some color (to the door, etc) or leave it brown?

I would prefer the garage door a lighter color. Close to the brick color so it blends in or even the trim color. No to shutters. The door colors on your 2 inspiration pictures above would be nice

I dropped something off at a similar house recently, and they had created a little garden path with patio in the corner between the front door and garage, like the area to the right of your front door. The front walk was still there, but because I love a path (see my usernamel?) of course I detoured among the boxwoods through the patio and the path exited at the front stoop. Just a couple of chairs and a table, plants, very sweet. The homeowner told me they like to decorate it for the seasons and often packages were left on a chair or under the table where they were not to visible and somewhat protected. It also softened the look of the house.

The ones you posted looks a lot like the first one I posted. I don't think it would look odd with the garage. I'd take it to an architect and see what her/his renderings look like and if you like the look.

We have large urns and have used lavender or perrinals in summer, changing content seasonally and had no issues (live in Toronto). Also used boxwood, cedar and mongo pine all year, supplementing with additional seasonal pots on ground with mums, cabbages, or over the holidays small lights on greenery and ribbons on urns. Don’t worry about weather.

I wouldn’t add shutters but suggest additional landscaping to break large yard and create dimension and interest - a berm design is a nice choice.

I’m adding a practical approach to adding a porch. If you get a lot of packages they would be protected from the elements. If your front door is used a lot it also provides protection from the elements and a place to stand out of the rain, etc while you’re waiting. The pictures provided would work.

Do not add shutters! The style of the home is just right as it is. If your front door is stained, I'd leave it brown so it coordinates with the garage. If the garage and door are just painted brown, you could paint the garage a lighter taupe like your trim color, and paint the door a deep red. You can easily decorate pots or urns for the season with natural elements, which may be a change from the decorative items you used on your porch. In winter, you can put pine boughs in the pots, with pinecones & outdoor ornaments and ribbons. Mums with dried corn stalks and small pumpkins in the fall, and flowering plants with dried branches in the spring and summer. If you're concerned about packages, get a waterproof container to place on the side of your porch, behind the shrub on the right side of your door.

Your home is gorgeous. My sister uses 2 large planter urns & changes them out seasonally. She also places a nice seasonal wreath on the front door.

During the holidays & usually when just visiting, we enter through her garage entry door.
