Yaupon holly is native to bottomlands and along the coastal plains of the Gulf states with its western range ending at the Edwards Plateau in Texas. It grows in acid to mildly alkaline soils, from sand to clay. Annual rainfall ranges from as little as 26" in the west to over 50" in the east. It's suitable for your winter lows, and will take heat, but its normal climate is subtropical humid. While it is drought tolerant, it is not a desert plant. Supplemental watering will be needed. I suggest you talk to local nursery owners about your site and get their input on suitability.
