Yes, it would be safe but it will most likely affect the taste somewhat.

The Center for Home Food Preservation is the gold standard of food preservation sites, if they say it's OK, then I'd trust them.

I have made sugar free jams and fruit spreads and the only issue I have had is that they don't keep as well as others with sugar in them. They don't spoil but they do lose flavor and color more quickly. I wouldn't try to keep it more than a year or so as the quality does go down and, as Jack noted, the sugar is more for flavor than for preservation qualities.
