Well, forgive me. I just saw that you posted Morning Pleasure the other day in the red daylily section. I see that it has Mary's Baby as a parent, which is what drew my attention to it now. Any comments on it?..............Maryl

Maryl - I got it last Spring, and I do really like it. In this first year, it only had 8-12 buds, but I like the color. We only got into the low 90s last summer and I had the pot in afternoon shade, so I don't know how well the color holds. One fan bloomed in June, and the other two fans bloomed in late July through August. Unfortunately I didn't get it planted in the groiund, so I'm hoping it makes it through winter in a pot. It is a dormant, so it should do well in the pot. The bloom is not as round as you like - petals are long but do recurve when temps get up to about 92. It also has Born to Run as a parent, and Born to Run is an awful splotcher. There were a couple of splotchy flowers when each fan first started to bloom, but the majority of flowers were unmarred.

Gee, that's a pretty color. REALLY like it with the small white edge......Mary's Baby isn't the usual round form I prefer, but it's got such great habits otherwise that it doesn't bother me. But being a parent doesn't necessarily make a good child (as you well know). Not a fan of blotching. Have gotten rid of many reds that were good except for the blotchiness. Do you find reds having more problems with that then other colors (since you love reds)?..............Maryl

Maryl - Reds and purples With edges have a tendency to be splotchy. The wider the edge, the greater the tendency. I haven't noticed the problem on reds and purples without edges. Any color with a fancy edge can be prone to splotching if it begins opening at night or in the early morning hours - I often have splotchy pinks and lavenders too, and sometimes a few spotchy oranges. The reason I hybridize so much with red Ultimate Sacrifice is that it holds a tight bud until morning and avoids dew splotches. I'm always hopeful its babies will have that trait, and most of them do.

Your comments made me think of Mary's Baby again with it's thin white edge on purple. It doesn't splotch for me, and the thin white edge on Morning Pleasure may help it in that department as well. Will love to see what develops next year........ and thanks for all insights............Maryl
