Countertop mistake?? Granite vs. Quartz

we recently did a kitchen refresh for our new home (painted the cabinets white, new countertops, new backsplash hardware, and lighting). We really like the way that it turned out but I wonder if we should have gone with a more clean look with quartz countertops and a different backsplash for a modern look. my Husband only wanted to do quartz in the bathrooms vs the kit hen because he said that granite would be more durable. it doesn't seem like granite is still "in style" and I'm wondering if we made the right decision on our materials. I've attached some before and after photos.

Sounds like you have buyer's remorse. Stop fretting. There is nothing wrong with the way your kitchen looks. More important is if it works for you.

The kitchen looks fine. You've picked some things I wouldn't have picked, but that is just a matter of different tastes and likes.

Just be careful in trying to turn your suburban colonial home into something it will never be, a sleek modern house.

Everything becomes trendy or dated at some time. Not much you can do about it, except pick things because you like them and they fit the character and style of the house.

The kitchen looks nice, but I'm not sure if I would call it modern. Having different tile behind the stove is not a very modern look even if you chose a more modern tile. Granite in general is also a bit busy for a modern look. Your range hood and the trim at the top of cabinets are also more traditional looks rather than modern though I get they are leftover from the kitchen before the makeover. Overall Id say your kitchen is more transitional than modern. Its a nice kitchen though. I kinda like it except for behind the range.

    It looks great!

It’s normal to second guess one’s design decisions. Best to not overthink this. If you want to modern-up a bit, you could change out the range hood for a somewhat simpler stainless version.

Looks great. It’s a simple pattern and compliments your cabinets nicely. Enjoy!

It looks great. The granite is classic. And more heat resistant!

If the backsplash bothers you a little it’s probably because the counters are mostly empty. Use the usual staging tricks. Add something wood ex. Lean a pretty cutting board up against the backsplash. And then something else like three pots of herbs or a nice cookbook in a stand or the pretty flour, sugar, and beans canisters or add a colorful artful looking cooking thing like a Le Creuset pot on the stove.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, I wasn't a big fan of the backsplash. The tilers didn't do a great job (didn't use spacers) and I wasn't 100% sure that we selected the correct tile or grout color (grey). Overall I really like our kitchen and the new vibe that it has, but I agree that adding accessories would make it look a lot better and I wouldn't focus on every little detail.

If the tiler skill was low, you made the right decision to go subway tile and have the grout match the tile. Much easier to lay and to hide spacing issues.

I think your kitchen looks great! It’s hard to see what your granite looks like because there is a lot of reflection from the window. Any more white and I think your space may look a little sterile. I think granite is a better choice. Like one previous comment, it’s more heat resistant.

I think your granite is lovely, and at the end of the day, the kitchen is a working space so having the heat resistant counter is important. I agree with others that I'm not a big fan of the tile behind the range. Overall, the kitchen looks great!

IMO granite is much preferable to quartz I gues if there was anything it would be the special tile behind the stove and IMO if you love it great.

    I really like it too.

If you did the quartz, I don’t think it would look that much different.

Enjoy you kitchen and don’t second guess yourself.

I LOVE what you've done - it looks fantastic and is a great, transitional style. I personally prefer granite to other materials and think there is a granite for every style, but that's just me ... tastes are subjective as you know and others' will differ. But if you're asking if it's outdated....no....it's stone, a natural product, and the same way that wood won't be out of fashion for certain uses, neither will stone products. Enjoy your new kitchen!!!

It looks great. A line goes half around planet earth for that kitchen. go take a walk/BREATHE..

Go online and get a couple runners for your floor. sink /cook area.

Add some life with a change in the counter stools. try a color for those that is somewhere else in your home and a LOW back style that also relates to rugs you select!

Use that open book case for the same concept!

Just because it is a neutral space, doesn't mean it musty remain VOID of your personality, and all in one gray, white, black palette.

Even very neutral spaces need contrast/texture.

It looks lovely and it's done. Stop torturing yourself. You will always find people telling you they would not have done the same way. But it's lovely and the granite that are not popular these days are largely the very busy ones, which yours is not.

Granite and quartz are both good materials. Who cares about “trends”? I just want the gray gray gray to go away. Your kitchen is beautiful, and the only thing you need to add is some color: ceramic pot for big utensils, dish towels, potholders, art, window treatments, perhaps a rug or two in areas where you stand a lot.

I love your granite and I am not usually a granite fan. Your whole kitchen is beautiful, congratulations - I especially love the lights! BTW I am 1 year post-kitchen reno and I am still second guessing a couple of deets and planning to change my grout color to something lighter like yours 😀 I think I miss the thrill of looking at tile and obsessing over the lighting choices etc.

I think instead of “modern” you mean “up to date”? Yes, your kitchen looks up to date to me. The white kitchen is classic and always in style, rather than being “trendy.” Granite is appropriate for kitchen countertops.

Your kitchen is a blank canvas. It just needs finishing touches. Your cabinets and backsplash are already plain surfaces, so a Quartz or Quartzite countertop would be yet another plain surface, and could make your kitchen look cold and institutional. The touches of black in the granite and behind the cooktop adds visual interest. But black is another neutral color. So, add your personality using an accent color in accessories, art, fruit in a bowl, and kitchen mats.
