Help I'm lost!!

I want to brighten up my house and redecorate totally with a more scanadavian design. I am feeling sooooo overwhelmed with what do do with all my old stuff. Can I keep it a repurpose it? Would scandanavian style work in my house?? I have zero idea where to start. Any thoughts or tips would help. Like what is step one to redecorating??

A layout is step one. Is the door with the lattice grid your entrance door to the house? If so then we have to get you into the house and through this room. Can you provide more pics of the living room and your furnishings so we can provide a layout. I don't think you want the TV in front of your window if that can be avoided.

That door is to the deck. This week it is ctually being changed into a large slider. The living room is so big, but pretty narrow. We have tried so many combos and I never feel like I love it. thanks for your reply and help!

First off, love your home and the layout!

I think if you want to achieve a Scandinavian style you will need to replace some key furniture pieces. I would first come up with a plan of the pieces you want to purchase, their price and budget/schedule their purchase from there. I think new couches will get you there the quickest. Then, selling your current pieces on FB Marketplace (or wherever) just before you purchase the new items.

Here's what I think of when I think of Scandi style:

Do you have any inspiration photos you can share?

    Hope this helps!

These are AWESOME!!! Spaces!! Loveee the potential here!! I’d paint the trim and brown doors white. or what’s the color in the living room already? Basically paint the whole space one color. Remove any soffit, bulk heads, extra walls if you can! 😬 I know it’s a big deal but that’ll open the entire space and make it sooo much cozier. I would stay with neutral furniture and neutral colors. Layer tons of textures!! Blankets pillows rugs poufs.... we’ll bring in lots a pops of color in the details. New lighting also maybe. Show us some inspo photos if you have any. I think a sectional will lol great here.... I really am excited with this space it’ll look so amazing so soon. I gave a lot of ideas so start with what you can... obv the more the better but it is a lot!! Can’t wait to follow along!

We are definetly thinking of a leather sectional. a lighter brown leather.

Loveeee that!! Really pretty. You see how in the inspo pic the couch is a material Almost white gray? That’s what I was imagining. Do you specifically want that brown leather? I just think the wear and tear of the material is better and looks less visual heavy. But a leather one is also BEAUTIFUL!! we can certainly bring that leather in in some chairs and accent pillows....

Without dimensions, this is what I think could work for your space. I think it's best to keep the walkway along the staircase from the front door to the kitchen/dining area.

This can be a sofa with two lounge chairs or a sectional, but the dimensions are critical.

I will try that layout today and post pictures. I do like being able to sit on the couch and look out the windows. thank you!

This is an excellent background on Scandinavian design, a very interesting read. I think it helps to have some knowledge of design history, especially with an idea this broad.

Your lovely house is full of warm tones, so in updating, that’s the direction I’d go with bringing in Scandinavian elements ... rather than the stark and cool blacks and grays. I think your inspiration pictures are great.

This is a stunning Scandinavian apartment (and do browse the blog for more inspiration):

Natural light is a huge thing, and your beautiful windows are perfect in that regard.

This has some elements of rustic with Scandinavian and is one example of incorporating a collected look, rather than a theme.

Beverly is awesome with room layouts!

    .................

Anyway, I think your house can have a very organic look with Scandinavian elements and influences, without looking forced. :)

Honestly, based on your inspiration photos I think the style you're wanting is more California/West-coast mid-century mod more than anything. I also think that will be easier for you to achieve with the handful of pieces you already have (dining chairs, accent chair, rug, raw edge bench) that lean-to that era and style.

Check out this home for inspiration:

I would rearrange your gallery walls and change your lights.

Glo‘s great photos show lots of Scandinavian elements, which American MCM was heavily influenced by.

It was published in 2012, but “How to get that modern Scandinavian look” on Houzz is an excellent article. It explains the various elements of Scandinavian design. This is something you could work on over time. I think your house would lend itself beautifully to this design aesthetic. I would take my time on this and try to invest in some iconic pieces of furniture and lighting. Really do your homework on Scandinavian design before proceeding. Best wishes ... you have a beautiful home.

The new layout looks great but I would shift everything closer to the TV, centering the long couch to the left window:

Also, allow the rug to hang over the left side of the couch more.

    Hope this helps!

I just picked up a magazine called 'Scandi at home' which is a European publication full of beautiful images. Scandinavian countries generally keep walls and sometimes furniture light in color because they have very limited natural light, but there is a surprising number of ways to do Scandi style and to inject color into it. It doesn't have to be all white, all neutrals. If you can't find a store that sells this magazine, which I recommend, they do have an Instagram account @scandiathome. I couldn't find a website.
