Possible MCM piece?

I know there are quite a few folks on this board who know MCM furniture. My neighbor found this at a garage sale, brought it home to re-sell but I fell in love with it! It's mine now. It appears to have started life as a blond piece but was painted (possibly multiple times). Hardware has been replaced but the legs and feet are original. No markings or labels. No visible screws/nails/joins. Solid little piece. Stands 3 feet tall, long edges are just a hair over 27" and depth is 18" . Any ideas on what it is and possible manufacturer? I don't know if this was a kitchen piece or a bedroom piece. Neighbor said there were 2 but someone bought the other.

I'd think maybe liquor cabinet if there weren't two. Surely that would be too much of a good thing! No indications it was built in?

Maybe it was a pair of custom built cabinets. If there were two, makes me think someone wanted to have two tables flanking something like a fireplace or sofa. The shelves could have held books or what ever.

Fori, completely free standing. Legs appear original and are definitely period. All front (exposed) cabinet pieces are wood. Back and sides are early pressed board; there's a pressed pattern appearance I can see under the paint.

Nice. It definitely has a Sputnik vibe to it.

No idea of the maker’s original intent but it is super cute!

Isn’t it great? I’ve been looking for a corner cabinet for my powder room for 13+ years. I’m going to use it as is, since it “works”. Some day I may decide to change it. Here it is cleaned up and in the space. Don’t mind the mess...and it is an interior room so it appear dark

I think that was a mass produced piece. I have a vague memory of one like that in a relatives home as a telephone table in the large kitchen, I think.

It looks great in the powder room! The fact that it goes in the corner, it gives you closed storage space for extra TP and bowl cleaner, and display space. Nice score!

It looks custom to me, and possibly from the late 1940s. It is not something that would look good in a furniture showroom, but it would be easy for a cabinet maker to make to order. The proportions would have to fit a particular corner, and so it is not a piece that one would move from room to room or from house to house that easily. I think it was built site specific.

Thanks for chiming in Lars. I figured you would have an interesting perspective. Since these were a pair (my neighbor bought one of the pair as one sold), I'm thinking they may have been part of a bedroom suite. They fit perfectly in a corner, are appropriate height for a nightstand and, knowing how small some older homes bedrooms are, could have been a custom request to complete a suite. they are well made. Late 40s/early 50s seems appropriate.

I'm going to enjoy the piece immensly! Thank you everyone!

That is such a fun find and so perfect in your powder room, especially since it doesn't even need painting. Congratulations!
