Metric Grease Fittings?

I tried to do the 8 hour lubrication on my new John Deere E130. I had no trouble doing the front end zerts, but when it came to the 42" mower deck it was something else. The grease gun I have used for 14 years would not couple to the zerts on the mower spindles. The gun fitting would not couple with the zerts on the spindle and grease went every where.

Are the zerts on the John Deere 42" deck metric or am I and my grease gun just getting old?

If they are metric can they be replaced with one in English units.

Can you by the coupler of the grease gun for metric zerts. It is a standard pump type gun with a rubber hose on the end that takes grease cartridges.

Old dog new tricks.

Listening to what was posted here. I learned the grease gun I had for 20 hears has a variable aperture on the connector, and if coupler does not go on the fitting just unscrew the end a little to open the aperture until it does. I have learned a lot about that old grease gun in the last week. One other thing is that it works better to add grease to the hose end rather than the plunger end. I wonder what else I have been doing wrong for the last 77 yeas.

One other thing: Why did not someone tell me it would be easier to remove the deck rather than grease the spindle fittings while the deck was on the 42" deck on my John Deere E130 tractor? I spent 40 minutes trying to get the shield off of the shoot side, and then 5 minutes applying the grease. The other side took about 15minutes.

Try a little more grease to the front end zerts.

The spindles may be full of grease and the grease is running all over as it has no other place to go. On many machines the grease in the spindles is only there for cooling and not for lube purposes.

This won't help, but I have some old metric zerks that are the same size as normal. I did buy a Harbor Freight jack that the grease fitting was smaller and would not fit my gun and I just swapped it out with one of my fittings that was the right size. Also, on some grease gun connectors you can turn the connector and change how tight it grips.

Krnuttle , zerk fittings come with American Standard Thread configurations 1/8" - 28 & 1/4" - 28 & 7/16" - 28 threads per inch are the most common , however Metric 6 mm & 8 mms & 10 mm are also utilized within the last decade . As previously mentioned some high end or quality grease guns have adjustable heads to assist within dirt or oxidation and normal wear and tear issues !

The MANUAL? I inherited the grease gun with the tractor about 20 years age. This was Dad's second or third lawn tractor, and I have no idea of when the grease gun came into the family or where the manual went. Dad had kept it in the original box, which I still have. I had a cheap grease gun that did not have a variable aperture in the coupling, you just put it on the fitting and pumped. I only used it for the boat trailer hubs.
