Help deciding on size of pulls for upper cabinets

I have decided to go with all pulls for my soon to be installed kitchen. My dilemma is what size pull to use on the top 42 inch cabinets that run along the wall (pic below).
Based on some advice I received from a designer (and the guidelines I’ve read here about the pulls being 1/3 of the cabinet size), the 7 9/16” (total = 8 3/8” or 213 mm) size would be the suggested size for the upper cabinets.

I asked the designer if I could go smaller and she said I could use the 5 inch pull (total length = 5 7/8” or 149 mm) (but not any smaller).

Would the smaller pulls work on the upper cabinets of my kitchen when I have such tall cabinets?

I have two concerns - because we have so many cabinets, will it look like overkill to have so many large pulls on the wall, or is this not going to happen because the cabinets are so tall? Also, the kitchen pics I like best seem to have smaller pulls and not the very long ones (although it’s hard to tell from the pictures what size pulls I’m seeing).

The pull you pictured will always catch on clothing. See those ends sticking out? Magnets for loose ends. I always say knobs on doors and pulls on drawers.they do not have to match. And yes, the top hardware can be smaller than the lower hardware.

I just realized I posted the wrong pull! Here is the one I chose. Shouldn’t be a catching on clothes issue (I hope).

I have smaller pulls on my upper cabinets vs my lower drawers. 5 inch and 8 inch. It looks fine, nobody would ever even think to notice the difference. I think we always overthink these things. 😆

@K R you are definitely right about that. Ultimately, I am going to follow my designer’s advice and go with the almost 8 inch pulls on top. A good friend gave me the reassurances i was looking for (and she said The exact same thing). I just needed someone to tell me it will look gorgeous!

p.s. I love your kitchen - I think it looks great!

Hi Iris! I am having same questions. Since I have 10ft ceilings and the uppers are 36 to 44 I’m thinking 8” pulls. Did you go with 8” on uppers? Do you have a picture? Thanks so much!

@Iris, Thanks for the information! It might be late and I'm moving a little slow but you mentioned 42 inch top cabinets and pulls being 1/3 of the cabinet side. Wouldn't 1/3 of 42 inches be 14 and not 7 9/16? I'm also having issues deciding pull size for 42 inch upper cabinets so trying to understand your choice of 7 9/16 and what your reasoning was for that. Thanks!!!!
