Hallway gallery wall question

last modified: 5 years ago

I'm going for a look similar to the one pictured below. My hallway photos are also below - same wall, differnt perspectives. If you see that first stretch of wall on the left hand side, I can only go with a row of four photos comfortably, but I know that it's easier on the eye to compose in odd numbers. For what it's worth, I will be adding a 5th frame in the space between the two doors at the end of the hallway as seen in the last photo, so that might help. Should I go with bigger frames an stick to three on the main stretch or will the four look ok? I don't want to go with smaller frames, as they will get lost and clutter the space. Sorry I don't have a template taped up to show you, as I'm dealing with the challenges of having a household member in quarentine right now. :-(

Thanks!

    I would do three.

Maybe I added the fourth frame to the wrong wall?? If there is space between the two doors, I would add a fourth frame there and a fifth frame to the perpendicular wall.

Yes I agree. Three big ones.

Your hall isn’t nearly as wide or as well lit as your inspiration. Consider scale here. Large won’t have a vantage point to even be viewed. You’ll also need to add the gimbal lighting to shine directly on the art in order to compensate. That wall of windows and wide hall are difficult architectural elements to overcome, and impossible to ignore.

I like friday’s mock-up a lot. It doesn’t look overwhelming or claustrophobic, it’s very artistic and interesting. Looks like there’s plenty of room to see the art.

I had a similar set-up in my last house (long hallway), loved it.

There is plenty of room for your inspiration. The scale is perfectly fine. The wall of windows in the inspiration is not an asset imo because over time, the light exposure will damage the photographs. Your hallway will look fantastic.

Celedon - That sample photo is more inspirational as aspirational, LOL. I don't want to disregard the wall altogether just because the viewing angles won't be ideal. Anyting I do there will suffer from the same disadvantage. As it happens, the opening opposite the wall into the living room is fairly large, so anyone sitting in that room will have an excellent view at probably two of pictures hanging there. And anyone walking into my front door also has an unobsructed view through the living room onto that wall. I guess what I'm saying is that the entire wall isn't a loss. And finally, the only people who acutally walk all the way down that hall, if at all, are me and my family, as the master, home office and 2nd guest bathroom are located there. So in the end, I guess I'm just looking to give the hallway some depth and interest rather than have it actually serve as a "viewing gallery." I hope that makes sense.

Gallery walls can be a bit challenging. Here are a few we did for a client. Note the different sizes we used.
