staining disaster

So a couple years ago I had our dining table refinished but chose a stain that was way to dark. I refinished it and have loved it. Fast forward, I decided to refinish our coffee table and now I’m in the midst of a disaster. I sanded the whole thing, put on a water based prestain, then started with a water based grey stain hoping to tone down any red color. It didn’t seem to do much so I just went for a darker color- dark walnut. I threw it on and the colors all just turned out weird. Some of it may be the wood itself(?) or the original stain. So I let it sit over night hoping to put on another layer and darkened it more. I realized this morning that the can of dark walnut I was using was oil based.
What do I do with this mess? Do I sand it drown a starry over? How long should I wait? Will it even ever dry?
