does anyone know what this is?

I moved into this house and found these two doors. They are on the back side of a fireplace in the other room. there is a handle that turns the grate. I don't understand the purpose of this.

This is, I believe, a home incinerator. Does it have a gas jet? People used to install them before air pollution was a concern. You could burn household trash in them. That is what the grate is for. They used the chimney flue. And had a clean out for ashes beneath them. My parents had one in a home they built in the early 1950s. It had a gas flame. I remember being afraid of going near it when I was little. They removed it sometime in the 1970s.

@funxtionthenlook I too thought it was to clean out the fireplace but it isn't attached. It is a separate compartment enclosed init self.
