Plants that have strong essential oils are avoided by deer and they might even be effective as a deterrent....if you make like a hedge of them. But I have never tested this out personally.

Fortunately, a number of these kinds of plants are edible and make a good accompaniment to a vegetable garden. Herbs like rosemary, lavender, sage, thyme, tarragon and oregano will work. And mint, but it needs to be contained or it will take over.

Alliums - onions, leeks, garlic, etc. - are another possibility. Deer won't eat them but again, I have no idea how well they might act as a deterrent.

• I suggested pepper as a deterrent for deer years ago to a lady. She paused while thinking and said: "We're not allowed to grow vegies here" I do have some experience with aliums as a deterrent. The vacant lot next door is being overrun with garlic. There's a patch about 25 feet from our kitchen window. The deer don't eat the garlic; but they keep their nose down to the ground as they go thru the garlic like they always do while eating. If there's a nice Dandelion in a patch of garlic I would guess they eat the Dandelion.

That sounds amazing with the garlic. Out of curiosity. Aren't peppers technically a fruit?

Yes, they are. But then again, so are a good many other plants we commonly grow and eat as vegetables.

The only plants I have evre seen deter deer are strong scented Salvias; and that would only work if you had a deep layer of them around your garden.

Not sure yet but I just made a batch of spray with hot water,ton red pepper flakes and cayenne pepper strained off of course. Hope it works. Nothing else has so far. $@#& deer
