Please help with backsplash for kitchen

We have completely remodeled a home we purchased. We now have a large u-shaped kitchen that is open to the living room. We have white shaker cabinets and Dallas White granite counters. The island is dove gray. We will have stainless appliances and sink. The floors are hardwood stained in Provencial. The walls are painted agreeable gray.

The builder standard is white subway, but I'm thinking that we need a little more color. Some have mentioned a light taupe with gray. I have to let the builder know by Monday if I want to change from the standard, so I don't have a lot of time to shop around. I would love ideas and suggestions!

Very pretty. Love your floors. Pull a taupe color from the countertops.

I agree. Bring in taupe from the counters. Also, consider an interesting shape. As opposed to the subway. I think a finger tile would looks great or even something with the handmade kinda shape to it

Thank you @jck910 and @HU-187528210. Would you happen to know of any names or links to tiles like this?

Depending on where you are and everything. Tile bar is a great start

Or do what we did.... ask them to not install a backsplash, ask for a credit for what the standard splash would cost and use the savings to get something you really love.

And I agree, no subway, something with shape, dimension, etc. It’s difficult to give recommendations without knowing your budget.

I waited after my house was built, about 2 years. And it cost me 2 1/2 x more, than if I would have had the builder do it.

I'm not sure that we have a Tile Bar near us. We do have a Floor & Decor about 10 minutes away. I also told my husband today that if it came down to it- we would just ask for a credit toward the backsplash because I don't want the white subway tile.

@megs1030 Regarding budget- we don't necessarily want to "break the bank", but I think the decision of the kitchen backsplash is major because it is the focal point of the whole house- so definitely willing to spend more.

However we would like to go ahead and have the builder install the tile next week so we could finish and close if possible. If we were able to find the tile that we love in the next few days- we would be willing to pay the difference and have them install.

Hi Barbie. Your kitchen is beautiful. I noticed you said there was a floor and decor near you. These were a couple of options I saw on their website.

    Good luck

Thank you @jck910 and @Tanya. I like your suggestions! I also like the TileBar site where you can upload a picture of your kitchen and change out the tiles. We're gonna try to go to Floor & Decor first thing in the morning.

Because of your island color, I would keep the splash tile white to eliminate clashing neutrals. You could go with a contrasting grout. In working with clients, backsplash is a decision that takes time. Do not rush this. Grab a variety of tile samples and look at them in your room. If you go white, make sure the tone flows with your surfaces.

I did see this pic of a kitchen in a home that was just listed nearby today. Their kitchen and colors are similar. It looks to mix in the gray, taupe, and white/off white. Does anyone like this? If so, would you have any idea what it would be called?

@Color Zen I found these 2 pictures on your site of kitchens you've designed. From the pics it looks like white with a little hint of gray/beige. Do you think the backsplash in these 2 kitchens would work in mine? If so, what is the name?

Those are actually carrara marble tile, probably too cool in color tone for you :)

Does anyone think that any of these might work? We found these at our local Floor & Decor.

I really liked this as maybe a decorative piece under the hood vent. But not sure if any of this would work. I was hoping to tie in the gray and beige.

I would find a tile that has browns and golds in it. I think the grays are going to be too cool against your counters and wall color.

I would not consider taupe as a “color” with this palette. Why not try a runner rug (or three) which has one or two of the kitchen colors included plus a light blue or light green. Then that bit of color can be used as an accent.

Your countertop has movement. Be careful if you’re looking at cool grey marble. One, it won’t work color wise and two, the veining can clash with your countertop. I think a solid taupe tile is a better choice. Or, wait, get a credit, and really take your time. Backsplash choices are hard and can be stressful. Why push the decision? TileBar let’s you get 5 samples for $5. I’m sure the builder has nothing like their tiles. I’m seeing an interesting arabesque shape in a creamy taupe...... :)

@megs1030 and @RedRyder - I completely agree. I think I just like these styles in the store, but agree that gray marbles wouldn't work for this kitchen. The builder today told my husband that he thinks gray subway (or white) would be best, but I don't think that's what I want. I agree with everyone on this board and want to bring in taupe/beige, brown/golds especially because our furniture leans toward taupe/beige.

Still looking for examples and accent for under the hood vent. All suggestions appreciated!!
