Do not put anything under that console the ottomans just look silly sticking out. At best a really narrow bench maybe .

That's pretty typical. Most cube ottomans are anywhere from 18" sq. to 24" sq. Your table looks to be about 15" deep. So having the ottomans stick out a bit is just fine. If it really bugs you, you can find a deeper console table, but at most they will be 18", unless you opt for a desk.

What is the purpose of the ottoman's under the table? I am planning a similar table behind my sofa, but want it specifically for dining while watching TV. Something like this. . .

Your table doesn't seem proportioned for sitting on the ottoman and eating at the table, so not sure why you would want to ottomans there.

I think it looks fine, and will look better when there are two ottomans next to each other there. See if it works to pull the table out about an inch or two (but leave the ottoman where it is). Does it have to be right up against the couch? I've never had a console table behind a couch, so I don't know. But I think the ottoman sticking out isn't anything to fret over.

@Jennifer Hogan when I recommend this for my clients, it's for extra seating that gets tucked away when not in use. You don't sit at the table; you pull them out to bring to the conversation area when you have a lot of guests. Then you can put them back to get them out of the way.

Julie, it will look fine with two of them as Sabrina has shown in her pix. No worries. I also like the pattern and color of the ottoman. Looks great with your floor.

Have another idea just because you are looking for extra seating…add a level to the console and use stools, instead of poufs.

Oh, I'm glad to see two more people had the same suggestion I made - to pull the table out a little bit away from the sofa. Not because I want to be right, but because I've never had a console table behind a sofa anywhere I've lived and it just looks to me like it needs to have a tiny bit of space between them, BUT since it's not something with which I'm familiar, I wasn't sure if it should be right up against it or not. Good to get a bit of confirmation on my instincts!

If you really think you will use the seating and the ottomans sticking out won’t interfere with walking by or using the console then having them sticking out a bit is fine. I like the idea of moving the console out a bit to offset the difference.

Don't listen to Patricia Colewell Consulting. The ottomans work & look just fine.

I think that once you get the second one in you will be very happy with it.

Instead of a floor lamp, consider lamps with suitable proportions and style (earthy) to suit the lovely wood piece.

Actually, ottomans are meant to protrude from the sofa table ... it adds visual interest!

I agree with the comments to pull the table a bit away from the sofa. That is a beautiful piece your father in law made. Other than possibly lamps on either side of it, I would not add anything else.

I agree with the suggestions to pull the table out a bit. Check the photo Maureen posted which is similar to your furniture for comparison . A tiny change that will help is to turn the ottoman(s) 90 degrees so the pattern on top parallels the table top rather than the floor boards. It will help them blend more with the table rather than jumping out at you visually.

Ur console without anything under it looks fine too.....but if you want a mini ottoman and that is the only one you have, position it in the middle of the space. It will balance the whole look.

I also don't think one has to match up a small furniture item. Have some fun with them it adds a pop of colour.

I hesitate to ask, but who are you trying to impress? The people on here who you don't know and you would likely trip over if we were allowed on the street? Please yourself and do what makes you comfortable. Either way looks fine. I like the wood sculpture but if I didn't and it was meaningful to you would you leave it there anyway? My guess is yes. So do what you love and it will come together how it was meant to be.

@hollywaterfall I don't think this lady is trying to "impress" anyone. As a retired Interior designer, I think she was just asking opinions to make sure it looked good. She made very good choices color wise, etc. I have a dear friend with excellent taste, but she will always ask me just to confirm her choice. Sometimes I have "tweaked" a couple of things for her, but when you're spending hard earned cash and want things to look good, it's not a problem to ask others opinions.

And....it makes things more fun as well.

Not trying to impress Anyone. Just didn’t know if the ottomans were too big. I asked in the forum because I know their are some professionals and individuals who like design in this group.

I have a similar set up behind my sectional. I made the ottomans. My kids use it every morning for watching cartoons while eating breakfast. Same thing sometimes during dinner...the ottomans are heavily used and the narrow table is great to have.

I think I have almost the exact same table behind the sectional in my great room. Love sitting there and having a snack while watching the news and such. Table came from Crate and Barrel and Target—of all places—happened to have the perfectly-sized ottoman to fit underneath it, so I grabbed one and ordered the other online! I’d zoom out, but there are currently totes all over the place as I try to catch up on decorating for the holidays. Your room is gorgeous, by the way!

I’ve also thrown some spare dining chairs under there, in my never-ending rearranging of the space, and that works well, too. :-)

@Julie Shanker , personally, if I were sitting on this couch, I would not want a tall table lamp on the console behind me because I'd wonder if someone would come around the back and accidentally knock it over on my head. The only way I'd be comfortable with a lamp there would be if it was obviously bottom-heavy and not about to tumble, or if I was on a couch that had a console between me and a wall. But that's just my own personal bugaboo - like whenever I see people put shelves above their bed, I immediately think about things falling on my head.

But truly, I love the console with that wooden piece by itself. Do you NEED lighting behind the couch, even if it's a floor lamp?

The second ottoman added and the photo being taken further back really helped to reinforce how good it looks. Very nice. You don’t have to add tall lamps on console and I would bring home a floor lamp and two table lamps - can‘t beat trusting the actual visuals to see what you like better.

@ thriftyboho Did you see how difficult it would be to walk around the consol and the end of the couch to knock over a lamp ???????? WOW.....you must be more rambunctious at your house than most.

Umm, @judygilpin , how can you say that when there hasn't been a picture showing any other part of the room? As far as we know, there could be a doorway behind the couch and console and maybe people need to walk around from the back of the couch to enter the room. Anything can happen. However, I didn't say that this particular arrangement and room looks dangerous, but pretty much in *any* situation (other than the console being against a wall or where the lamp is bottom-heavy or significantly below the back of the couch) I would be wary of a TALL lamp behind my head while sitting on the couch. I'm not rambunctious, but have been known to be clumsy, so I am attuned to situations that can cause accidents. That's why I intensely dislike shelves over the head of a bed. Just my own particular bugaboo, as I said. No need to mock me.

@thriftyboho WOW !!! Looks like you hate alternate or any helpful opinions. If you look at the photo there looks to be about 2 feet from the end of the console to the end of the arm on the sofa. One would have to jump over the back of the sofa right at the end of the console to knock over a lamp. BTW, I suggested something a little taller on the left side...be it a lamp, vase, or sculpture..........the homeowner can take that suggestion or not. I suggest you chill a little. Home decor suggestions are not the end of the world.

When you put lamps on a table like this, where do you plug them in? If you have a floor outlet, I can see it working. Otherwise, you need battery operated lamps or run a chord under a rug and that is not safe.

@debc25 That can be a problem. We had floor outlets placed. But you have to prepare ahead of time for this,especially if you have tile floors.
