The owner at Acacia Nursery said these are not native and need special care to avoid killing or damaging them from frost. We do like them, however.

yes that is all correct. when we get freezing temperatures it is beneficial to cover the tips of each columnar cacti as they are sensitive and potentially can die from the tip. it won't kill the plant but potentially can cause some damage. a common protector used are styrofoam cups.
